Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Admin Nurse III and the Senior LVN Supervisor, the Senior Licensed Vocation Nurse provides nursing support and leadership in the Department of Urology. Major duties include: provide patient care in an outpatient setting, assist with urologic procedures such as cystoscopies and bladder installations, start I.V.s, perform venipuncture, administer medications, manage patient flow, collect data as appropriate and provide back-up for the clinic front desk, as needed. The incumbent spends a significant portion of time contributing to the development and implementation of a teaching plan related to self-care for the patient. The Sr LVN will travel and work at other UCLA Urology clinics throughout the community as assigned by the supervisor for coverage. Other duties as assigned.

Salary Range: $38.54 - $50.84

Required:
  • CA LVN License with IV and Blood Withdrawal certification
  • Possession of BLS certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Ability to work flexible hours and travel to other Urology clinics as assigned
  • Ability to perform patient assessments and take appropriate action
  • Skill at setting up and maintaining sterile fields
  • Ability to work as part of a team, communicate effectively and establish cooperative working relationships with administrators, doctors, peers and public
  • Knowledge and experience in administering intramuscular and oral medication and monitoring I.V.
  • Ability to assess inventory levels
  • Knowledge and understanding of medical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
  • Knowledge of specific treatment protocols to be utilized
  • Ability to exhibit flexibility in adjusting to changing demands and requirements of the position
  • Expertise in communicating with patients and their families with diplomacy and sensitivity.
  • Ability to promote effective communication to faculty concerning a typical clinic events or patient activities
  • Ability to meet and maintain one's own professional needs
  • Skill in setting priorities which accurately reflect the relative importance of the job responsibilities
  • Ability to write concise and clear progress notes
  • Skill at speaking to persons with various backgrounds to obtain information, explain procedures and interpret instructions.

Preferred:
  • Knowledge of urologic conditions and their treatments
  • Ability to assist with cystoscopic examination
  • Treatment skills including catheterizations and bladder installations
  • Experience with varied computer hardware and software including word processing, spreadsheets and database programs and the UCLA Hospital Information System
  • Expertise in speaking clearly and distinctly, in both Spanish and English, using appropriate vocabulary and grammar, to obtain and convey information to patients and individuals at various organizational levels, both in person and over the phone
