The RoleThe Packet Ethernet Engineer is responsible for performing engineering assessments and site surveys to support the installation, augmentation, and turn-up of customer Packet Ethernet services. This role identifies available space, power, cabling, and equipment requirements within existing network environments, traces customer services on installed hardware, validates facility readiness, and develops accurate technical documentation to support service delivery, grooming, and lifecycle activities.
The Main Responsibilities- Perform site surveys at customer and network locations to identify available rack space, power, grounding, cabling paths, and environmental requirements for Packet Ethernet installations
- Trace and document existing customer services on routers, switches, optical transport equipment, patch panels, and associated hardware to support augments, migrations, and turn-ups
- Evaluate existing hardware and facility infrastructure to determine service readiness, equipment compatibility, and implementation constraints
- Develop and maintain accurate engineering records, survey reports, as-built documentation, rack elevations, and port assignments
- Coordinate with engineering, service delivery, field operations, and customers to validate technical requirements and implementation plans
- Identify risks related to space, power, cabling, hardware utilization, and service impacts, and recommend mitigation actions prior to implementation
- Support service activation, grooming, and migration activities by confirming circuit paths, physical connectivity, and equipment assignments
- Ensure all survey and engineering activities are completed in accordance with customer requirements, company standards, and operational procedures
- Handle moderately complex engineering assignments with minimal supervision
- Work closely with customers, Government stakeholders, and internal teams on requirements, site readiness, and implementation support
- Provide technical guidance and field support for service delivery, maintenance, and change activities
- Create, update, and review technical documentation, survey packages, and implementation records
What We Look For in a Candidate- Strong knowledge of Packet Ethernet services, Layer 2 transport, routing and switching environments, and customer service delivery infrastructure
- Ability to read and interpret network diagrams, rack layouts, engineering work orders, and as-built documentation
- Experience identifying space, power, cabling, and port availability on existing network hardware
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills with the ability to trace circuits and validate service paths
- Strong customer-facing communication skills and ability to work effectively with field teams, engineers, and project stakeholders
- Strong writing skills required to document survey findings, implementation requirements, and operational procedures
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple site survey and engineering tasks
- Some local travel is required; must have a clean driving record
Education and Experience:- Bachelor's degree in engineering, Telecommunications, Information Technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant work experience
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in telecommunications, transport, Ethernet, or network engineering environments
- Experience with customer service turn-up, site surveys, circuit tracing, and infrastructure documentation is strongly preferred
- Experience with Cisco, Juniper, Ciena, or similar transport and Ethernet platforms is preferred; relevant certifications such as CCNA or CCNP are a plus
