Job Description:The Senior HR Generalist is a core member of NORA's Human Resources team, serving an organization of 1,100+ employees operating across more than 60 bases nationwide in a 24/7 organ-transportation logistics environment. This is a hands-on role that requires a skilled HR professional who is equally comfortable building relationships with frontline employees and navigating complex employee relations matters. The HR Generalist is a trusted, visible presence for employees and managers across NORA's distributed workforce, bringing both rigor and empathy to every interaction. With a primary focus on recruiting and employee relations, this role partners closely with the Director, Employee Experience & Talent to deliver consistent, compliant, and mission-aligned HR support across the full employee lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities:- Manage full-cycle recruiting for dispatchers, corporate office-based positions, and field-based positions as needed.
- Screen applicants, conduct structured behavioral-based interviews, and facilitate the selection process in alignment with NORA's mission, values, and competency framework.
- Maintain applicant tracking records; generate recruiting metrics and pipeline reports for the Director and leadership team.
- Serve as a primary employee relations resource for frontline employees and managers - a visible, accessible, and trusted point of contact for concerns, questions, and guidance.
- Conduct thorough, timely, and unbiased investigations into employee complaints, policy violations, and conduct issues; document findings and recommend appropriate resolution.
- Partner with managers to administer corrective action, progressive discipline, and performance improvement plans (PIPs) in a consistent and legally sound manner, while partnering with Director.
- Support managers through difficult employee conversations including performance concerns, conflict resolution, and separations - providing coaching, documentation guidance, and real-time backup.
- Maintain thorough, accurate, and confidential documentation for all employee relations matters.
- Interpret and apply HR policies and applicable employment law (federal, state, and local) to employee relations situations across NORA's multi-state footprint.
- Coordinate leave administration (FMLA, ADA, state leave) by engaging the interactive process, issuing required paperwork, and tracking time off taken.
- Manage workers' compensation claims from initial reporting through closure, partnering with HR Leadership and management as needed.
- Respond to unemployment claims.
- Serve as backup to the Payroll Manager for payroll processing, ensuring continuity of pay operations during staff absences.
- Learn and maintain proficiency in payroll processing procedures to be fully prepared to step in when needed.
- Support the preparation of HR reports, compliance filings, and audit documentation as directed.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of HR policies, procedures, and employee-facing resources.
- Facilitate and continuously improve NORA's new-hire orientation process, ensuring employees are introduced to the mission, values, and culture from day one.
- Coordinate role-specific onboarding plans with functional leaders and operations teams to accelerate time to productivity across NORA's diverse roles.
- Serve as backup to the HR Coordinator for onboarding activities.
- Coordinate exit interviews, off boarding, separation trends, and share findings with the Director to support retention and employee-experience improvements.
- Support NORA's participation in engagement initiatives & community engagement activities that connect employees to the organ donation ecosystem and NORA's mission.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of progressive HR experience with demonstrated depth in employee relations.
- Proven ability to conduct workplace investigations and manage ER matters with sound judgment, discretion, and appropriate documentation.
- Experience administering corrective action frameworks and supporting progressive discipline processes.
- Full-cycle recruiting experience across a variety of positions; experience with applicant tracking systems (ATS).
- Working knowledge of federal and state employment law including FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEOC, and state-specific requirements.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to build trust and credibility with all employees and managers.
- High degree of discretion, professional judgment, and integrity in handling sensitive and confidential information.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, operationally complex environment.
- Experience in transportation, logistics, healthcare, or other regulated, mission-driven industries.
- Experience supporting distributed, field-based, or 24/7 workforces (drivers, dispatch, remote/hub-based teams).
- Professional HR certification (SHRM-CP, PHR, or equivalent).
- Experience in applicant tracking systems; experience with Dayforce HRIS platform is a plus.
Work EnvironmentOn-site at our St. Charles, Illinois headquarters. M-F, 8a- 5p. Flexibility to work 4-6 mid-shifts per month based on business needs Occasional travel to regional driver locations to maintain frontline presence, including overnight travel approximately 2-3 times per year. Ability to support employee investigations outside of regular business hours, as needed.
