POSITION: Senior High Voltage Engineer

Department: Project Execution/Engineering

Location: Dallas, TX or Remote

Status:

Exempt

JOB SUMMARY:

This position reports to the Manager of Electrical Engineering and is responsible for supporting substation electrical engineering to interconnect new solar, wind, and energy storage plants. The goal of this position is to ensure substation and transmission line projects in project execution/construction and the development pipeline meet Leeward's technical and business requirements while maintaining our long-term ownership focus. The position requires experience with substation design and construction for utility-scale renewable energy plants.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Prepare substation and transmission line scopes of work, equipment specifications, and other technical documentation required to support substation EPC RFPs and contracts.
    • Management of an outside consulting engineer to support the high voltage-related preliminary design and associated studies.
    • Develop transmission line and substation cost estimates including visiting proposed sites to determine the most cost-effective interconnection means.
    • Support the transmission planning team in reviewing grid interconnection feasibility studies, system impact studies, facility studies, and interconnection agreements.
    • Perform owner's review of EPC contractor's technical deliverables related to substation and transmission line design packages and associated electrical studies such as load flow, voltage drop, arc flash, protection and coordination, and reactive power studies.
    • Ensure engineering work meets applicable codes, industry standards, and safety practices.
    • Coordinate technical interfaces with ISOs and utilities to comply with interconnection agreement requirements.
    • Participate in constructability reviews and review commissioning and testing reports.
    • Work closely with Project Engineers, Project Management, and Construction Management to assure the design is constructible and fully integrated into the project schedule.
    • Work collaboratively with Operations team members for technical specifications and design review interfaces.


Required Skills:
  • Prior experience in developing and reviewing equipment specifications and substation design including selection of substation equipment (power transformers, breakers, protection relays, etc.).
  • Familiarity or experience with renewable plant substation designs and interconnections in CAISO, ERCOT, PJM, and other regions.
  • Familiarity with NERC PRC standards.
  • Working knowledge of NESC, NEC, ANSI & IEEE codes, and standards.
  • Knowledge of ETAP or equivalent Software preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate ideas to non-engineers.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage priorities in a complex and dynamic environment.
  • 4-Year bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. PE registration preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant technical experience with substation engineering and transmission line design.


Physical Demands:
  • Position will require sitting for long periods of time
  • Occasionally lift 20-pound or more
  • Willingness and ability to travel at least 25% of time
