Join Alliant Energy as a Sr. Environmental Specialist and lead critical environmental compliance and strategy for power generation operations-leveraging your expertise in air permitting, EPA and DNR reporting, and regulatory interpretation to ensure full compliance across a federally regulated coal plant. Job Summary

Senior Genco Environmental Specialist develops environmental programs and training activities to meet business goals and regulatory compliance. This position provides leadership in the communication of environmental initiatives and risk impacts. This role performs in-depth analyses on environmental metrics, providing recommendations for the development of additional environmental plans. This role coordinates facility documentation processes, leads compliance program development, and assesses compliance with environmental regulations. This position evaluates and recommends action plans on proposed regulations.

What you will do
  • With oversight from supervisors, identifies and develops environmental plans and programs to meet applicable corporate policies, business goals, and regulatory compliance. Assists in the development of communication tools for environmental initiatives and risk impacts.
  • Leads, coordinates, provides, and/or conducts environmental training and education. Provides technical support for environmental management system program modifications and the implementation of improvements to the system.
  • Researches state-of-the-art developments in environmental controls. Recommends improvements and strategies including the integration of new environmental management programs to enhance performance.
  • Evaluates and develops comments on proposed state and federal laws and regulations. Coordinates with local authorities to review and assess emergency response procedures and capabilities.
  • Exhibits leadership in anticipating and addressing evolving and emerging environmental issues. Coordinates with departments and business units to identify on-going and future environmental needs and to develop and implement comprehensive strategies to meet these needs.
  • Works in conjunction with internal customers on complex environmental and research projects and analyzes improvements to workflow, policies, and practices.
  • Performs in-depth analysis and interpretation of environmental performance measures.
  • Coordinates the administration of environmental filing systems and all relevant records in compliance with permitting, monitoring, and record keeping requirements of environmental rules and regulations.
  • Assesses facility compliance with environmental rules and regulation, and ensures existing policies, practices, procedures, and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) plans are being followed. Participates in various environmental inspections and compliance audits.
  • Investigates environmental incidents and assists in implementation of improvement plans. Conducts onsite investigations and provides analysis on outcome of investigations.
  • Works with company environmental staff to integrate assessments of existing and anticipated environmental regulations into planning and operating decisions.
  • Engages in other duties as needed that support Alliant Energy's Values and helps deliver on our Purpose to serve customers and build stronger communities.


Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree Emphasis in civil, environmental or chemical engineering, environmental studies or physical or natural sciences, or related area Preferred

Required Experience
  • 5 years of experience in engineering, science, compliance planning work or environmental resource management with an electric utility, consulting firm or government agency

Other Requirements
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of electric, gas or steam operating practices, construction standards, work methods, equipment, maintenance practices, regulatory compliance, and materials preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with government agencies, utility groups, and other industries.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage project teams with cross-functional team member knowledge and experience preferred.
  • Solid knowledge and interpretation of environmental rules and applicable Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations as they apply to the utility industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret government regulations.
  • Demonstrated effective analytical skills and ability to perform successfully perform accurate analysis on performance measures and develop reports, charts and graphs.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use computer software programs (e.g., e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, database, and project management) preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

Pay Range:
$95,000-$110,000

This position is eligible to participate in the annual incentive program. The final salary offered will generally fall within this range and is dependent on various factors including but not limited to the responsibilities of the position, experience, skill set, internal pay equity and other relevant qualifications of the applicant.
