Job Title: Sr. FSQR Scientist - Compliance & Labeling

A role in:
Food Safety, Quality, & Regulatory (FSQR) means supporting processes that help Target succeed by consistently delivering compliant food and beverages.
As a Senior FSQR Scientist - Compliance & Labeling, you will ensure Target Owned Brand Food labeling meets relevant regulations and internal Target standards for select product categories. You will collaborate with internal and external partners throughout the product development process from strategy to commercialization. You also will be responsible for leading regulatory, nutrition, and labeling programs and projects.
Manage risk for Target through partnership with vendors to develop compliant labeling, while supporting business and guest needs
Ensure vendor FSQR compliance with Target requirements and regulations. Review and approve product specification and labeling information (e.g., product naming, ingredients, nutrition, allergens, claims, and graphics), packaging proofs/key-lines, and online content for assigned products or categories
Guide and influence Target Owned Brand Food product development, packaging, and claims through collaboration with internal and external partners, ensuring all are aware for expectations and priorities
Collaborate with internal and external colleagues to interpret regulations and technical information to develop solutions for ambiguous situations
Monitor and evaluate pending labeling regulations and industry developments to determine potential impact to Target and develop relevant action plans
Lead the development of labeling and claims guidance, standards, and processes for emerging and undefined areas, in partnership with legal and key stakeholders
Lead cross-functional project teams to design, develop and implement innovative programs, policies, and compliance standards in support of business directives
Contribute regulatory and nutrition expertise to health & wellness initiatives and communications
Identify opportunities and work with colleagues to improve internal labeling programs, processes, and systems. Invite and incorporate feedback, adapt appropriately to competing demands and shifting priorities.
Represent Target externally with active engagement, including participation in trade and professional associations, as needed, then share learnings with the team
Probe and look past symptoms to determine the underlying causes of problems and issues, choose the best alternatives/controls based on consideration of pros, cons, tradeoffs, timing, and available resources
Mentor and direct work of labeling colleagues, as assigned.
Provide food recall coverage and after hour food recall support, as assigned
Model and promote a culture which champions Target’s values and FSQR compliance
Other responsibilities that support the FSQR team as assigned
About you:
5+ years of labeling, regulatory, or product development experience in the food or pet food industry
U.S. food or pet food labeling experience required; Food manufacturer or pet food manufacturer experience preferred
Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Nutrition, or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience
Experience reviewing and approving ingredient and product specifications, labeling, artwork/packaging for consumer-packaged foods
Regulatory expertise, including experience interpreting and applying food labeling regulations to claims and products
Experience in influencing business or project strategies to align with regulations and FSQR requirements
Proven ability to lead and manage cross-functional projects, leading to sustainable results
Comfortable with ambiguity and demonstrates a growth mindset
Able to manage multiple tasks or projects and deliver consistently against timelines
Seeks out knowledge and information to drive positive change
Values diverse perspectives and work styles
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Work, Excel, PowerPoint)
This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
