As an HVAC Systems Modeling Engineer, you will serve as a technical expert responsible for developing, validating, and applying analytical models that evaluate the performance, water consumption, energy usage, and lifecycle economics of cooling towers and associated thermal management systems.
Working within the Global Technical Services organization, this role supports the development of engineering tools and simulation capabilities that enable SPX Cooling to optimize cooling system performance for mission-critical applications, including hyperscale and enterprise data centers. You will develop models representing cooling towers, chillers, condensers, pumps, heat exchangers, water treatment systems, and integrated heat rejection systems operating in diverse climates around the world.
Using historical weather datasets, operating profiles, utility rate structures, and customer-specific requirements, you will analyze annual and seasonal impacts on water consumption, power usage, thermal performance, and sustainability objectives. This role supports Product Management, Sales, Engineering, R&D, and Customers by providing data-driven insights that improve product selection, system design, resource utilization, and operating efficiency.
This position also contributes to SPX Cooling's digital engineering strategy by developing simulation methodologies, advanced analytics tools, and performance modeling capabilities that support product innovation, customer engagement, and long-term business growth.
What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:
- Thermal Systems Modeling & Performance Analysis
- Develop and validate analytical and physics-based models of cooling towers and associated thermal systems.
- Simulate system performance across varying climates, loads, and operating conditions.
- Develop annual water and energy consumption analyses using ASHRAE weather data.
- Evaluate sustainability and efficiency metrics, including Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) and Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).
- Optimization, Data Analysis, & Engineering Tools
- Perform optimization studies involving equipment selection, system controls, and operating strategies.
- Analyze laboratory, field, and operating data to validate and improve model accuracy.
- Develop engineering tools, databases, dashboards, and automated calculation methods to improve analysis and decision-making.
- Identify opportunities to improve product performance, engineering processes, and analytical capabilities.
- Technical & Business Support
- Provide engineering analysis, modeling, and technical recommendations to Sales, Product Management, Engineering, Global Technical Services, and customer projects.
- Translate complex modeling and performance results into practical recommendations that support product and customer decisions.
- Monitor industry developments and incorporate relevant advancements into product and process improvement initiatives.
- Participate in industry organizations, technical conferences, and other professional activities as appropriate.
What we are looking for (Required/Ideal Experience, Skills, Education)We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:
Required Experience & Skills- 5+ years of experience involving HVAC systems, thermal systems, energy analysis, or engineering simulation.
- Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, psychometrics, and HVAC systems.
- Experience developing engineering models, simulations, or analytical tools.
- Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ideal Experience & Skills- Experience with cooling towers, chillers, condensers, evaporative cooling systems, or data center cooling.
- Familiarity with ASHRAE standards and weather databases.
- Experience with Python, MATLAB, EnergyPlus, TRNSYS, CFD, or similar tools.
- Experience with annual water, energy, sustainability, or lifecycle cost analyses.
Education & Certifications- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline.
Travel & Working Environment- Onsite office environment Monday through Friday; hybrid work schedule available after satisfactory completion of probationary period.
- Occasional travel to customer sites, manufacturing facilities, laboratories, industry conferences, and technical meetings.
- Position may occasionally require work outside normal business hours.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and perform occasional bending, stooping, and standing.
