Position Overview:

The Senior Civil & Structural Engineer provides civil and structural engineering expertise in support of Motiva's Major Capital Projects organization. This role is responsible for reviewing, coordinating, and overseeing civil and structural engineering deliverables to ensure safe, reliable, cost-effective, and compliant project execution.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary project team, this position collaborates with engineering contractors, project management, construction, operations, and technical specialists to support project development and execution from concept through startup. The successful candidate applies strong technical expertise and sound engineering judgment to resolve complex design and execution challenges while supporting project objectives for safety, quality, schedule, and cost.

This is an onsite position based at Motiva's corporate headquarters in downtown Houston, Texas. Motiva offers a 9/80 work schedule, providing every other Friday off. On scheduled work Fridays, employees have the flexibility to work remotely.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide civil and structural engineering support for major capital projects within refining and petrochemical facilities.
  • Review and develop civil and structural engineering scope, deliverables, engineering work plans, and execution strategies.
  • Review engineering contractor designs, calculations, specifications, studies, and construction packages for technical accuracy and compliance.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, regulatory requirements, project specifications, and industry best practices.
  • Perform technical reviews and discipline checks of engineering deliverables to ensure quality, consistency, and constructability.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment to resolve technical issues and provide practical solutions to project challenges.
  • Support the analysis and design review of structural steel, reinforced concrete structures, foundations, and site development work associated with petrochemical facilities.
  • Coordinate civil and structural engineering activities across engineering contractors, project teams, and supporting disciplines.
  • Monitor engineering progress and identify risks that may impact project cost, schedule, quality, or execution.
  • Participate in design reviews, model reviews, constructability reviews, and risk assessments.
  • Support procurement and construction activities through technical evaluations, document reviews, and field issue resolution.
  • Ensure civil and structural deliverables are completed in alignment with project objectives, schedules, and quality expectations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve project execution, engineering efficiency, and design effectiveness.
  • Work closely with Process, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Construction, and Project Controls teams to support integrated project execution.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal stakeholders, engineering contractors, suppliers, and construction teams.
  • Provide technical support during design, construction, commissioning, and startup activities.
  • Communicate technical issues, recommendations, and risks clearly to project stakeholders.
  • Promote safety-in-design principles and support Motiva's commitment to safe project execution.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable environmental, regulatory, and engineering requirements.
  • Participate in quality reviews and continuous improvement efforts to enhance project performance and deliverable quality.
  • Support risk identification, mitigation planning, and management of civil and structural engineering risks throughout the project lifecycle.


Experience and Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum 10 years of civil and structural engineering experience supporting capital projects in refining, petrochemical, oil & gas, energy, or other heavy industrial environments.
  • Demonstrated experience with structural steel design, reinforced concrete design, foundations, and site development.
  • Experience supporting multidisciplinary engineering and construction projects through various phases of project execution.
  • Strong knowledge of civil and structural engineering principles, methods, and industry best practices.
  • Working knowledge of applicable engineering codes and standards, including IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI 318, and other relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Experience reviewing engineering designs, calculations, drawings, specifications, and contractor deliverables for technical accuracy and compliance.
  • Ability to identify, assess, and mitigate technical and project execution risks.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.


Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, preferably in the State of Texas.
  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience serving in an Owner's Engineer, EPC, or major capital project execution role.
  • Experience supporting large-scale grassroots or brownfield refinery and petrochemical projects.
  • Proficiency with STAAD Pro, STAAD Foundation, and other structural analysis software.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and related engineering design tools.
  • Experience coordinating with EPC contractors and managing engineering interfaces.
  • Experience supporting projects during construction, commissioning, and startup.
  • Multi-office, global, or international project execution experience.
