Full Job Description
Sr APCEngineer is responsible for designing, developing, installing, managing, and maintaining equipment and systems used to monitor and control engineering processes in manufacturing facilities and plants. This role ensures that industrial equipment and machinery work safely and efficiently and provides advanced process control support to refinery operations and projects. The engineer will promote process control strategies from basic regulatory control to multivariable control to multi-unit optimization and is part of the site Automation Team within the refinery technical organization.

What You'll Do
  • Develop, implement, maintain, and optimize advanced process control (APC) applications (e.g., MaxAPC, DMCPlus, DMC3); troubleshoot and support control systems.
  • Design engineering solutions and the associated validation process to enable the realization of a design brief (for example, in terms of functionality, performance, aesthetics, and cost) that conforms to organizational and/or regulatory standards.
  • Manage technical troubleshooting projects, ensuring effective diagnosis of technical issues with equipment and experiments and the development of effective solutions.
  • Analyze and improve plant processes and equipment; lead improvement projects and major installations.
  • Create, manage, and update technical documentation, engineering drawings, and product specifications.
  • Conduct research and analyze technical data to inform engineering solutions.
  • Identify and apply emerging technologies (e.g., machine learning, real-time optimization) to control applications.
  • Support Alarm Documentation and Rationalization (ARA) activities.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development and maintain a strong commitment to safety.
  • Participate in plant improvement teams and lead major equipment rebuilds and installations.

  • Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering discipline
  • 3 or more years of engineering experience in process engineering/design, process control, and/or advanced process control in refining, petrochemical, or a related industry


What Makes You Stand Out - Preferred
  • Master's or PhD in Chemical or Electrical Engineering with a focus in advanced control
  • 5 or more years of experience with Process Control Systems (Honeywell TDC2000, TDC3000, Experion DCS) in a refinery and/or chemical industry
  • Direct experience in:
    • Unit testing, modeling, and commissioning advanced control applications (DMCplus, MaxAPC, RMPCT)
    • OPC configuration and virtual machine development/configuration
    • Machine Learning/AI methodologies and application implementation
    • Real Time Optimization applications and implementation
    • Alarm Management and Control Performance Monitoring
    • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Predictive Maintenance, Preventive Maintenance Planning and Execution, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), System Integration
  • Professional certification


Skills & Tools:
  • Works at an advanced level to effectively utilize and apply a variety of engineering software, hardware, and methodologies to solve complex technical problems across various engineering disciplines. (MATLAB, PLC Programming, Simulation Modeling, CAD, FEA, etc.)
  • Works at an advanced level to collect, organize, analyze, and interpret technical data from diverse sources to support the design, development, and implementation of engineering solutions
  • Works at an advanced level to identify, diagnose and resolve operational problems through the development of engineering outcomes
  • Strong commitment to safe work practices
  • Ability to communicate technical and practical information clearly in a team environment
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite and data visualization tools


Compensation Range

This position has a base salary range of $141,300 -$172,700.

The Wood River Refinery is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low-sulfur; heavy, high sulfur; and high-acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada. Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
