Title: Senior Editor, The Bay

Schedule Format - Location: Hybrid - San Francisco

Pay Information: $112,000 - $140,000

Position Summary:
The senior editor will guide, oversee, and work with the show team to produce content, develop and maintain an editorial agenda, develop and maintain workflow and processes, and assure the highest quality for all content produced.

This position requires an experienced audio journalist proficient at editing scripts and mixes for audio stories, story conception, evaluating pitches, team and workflow management, audio production, writing for audio, writing and editing text stories, and producing other online content for the web, mobile and social media platforms.

Senior Editor, The Bay Addendum:
This role is the Senior Editor of The Bay podcast. The senior editor manages and assigns a team that includes a host and a producer, and works closely with editors, reporters and other journalists at KQED to create an engaging narrative news show that serves the audiences of the nine-county Bay Area. This senior editor is responsible for guiding story and coverage decisions, and holding and steering the creative vision for the program. This senior editor works with other departments at KQED, especially News, to collaborate and provide a platform for expanded reporting and stories. The senior editor should be comfortable with switching between roles and tasks on this small team, including assisting with production (cutting tape, booking guests) and hosting the show when necessary.

This role will work hybrid between working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters and working remotely.

Essential Functions:
  • Leads and manages the production and editorial team of the show
  • Supervises team members and facilitates their development.
  • Sets goals and operational standards for the team and show
  • Edits stories and episodes
  • Edits a variety of editorial content for the web, mobile and social media, such as audio, scripts, text stories, photographs, video and databases
  • Oversees the processes of developing coverage strategies, making assignments and delegating tasks
  • Manages editorial and production calendar.
  • Leads pitch meetings and approves episode topics.
  • Trains and mentors fill-in producers and interns
  • Serves as liaison to other internal teams and stakeholders as well as to outside partners or contributors where necessary
  • Assists with production as needed
  • Helps to plan and execute live or virtual events
  • Assumes other duties as assigned

Knowledge/Experience Required:
  • Three to five years of experience in audio journalism, including in an editor role
  • Experience with people and project management
  • Experience writing and editing/giving feedback on audio stories and scripts
  • Strong understanding of journalistic principles, ethics and standards, and ability to guide team and content accordingly
  • Familiarity with sound design and mixing for podcasts
  • Proficiency with Adobe Audition or similar DAW
  • Familiarity with writing and publishing for the web via blogs, news content management systems, mobile, social media editing and publishing
  • Familiarity with researching and reporting using a variety of technologies, methods and sources
  • Ability to stay organized and prioritize tasks when working on multiple projects at once
  • Ability to communicate with a variety of individuals and to work inclusively with a diverse staff
  • Ability to research and communicate through a variety of mobile and digital tools
  • Ability to work under deadline pressures

Knowledge/Experience Desired:
  • Experience working in a demographically and racially diverse news environment is strongly desired
  • Strong interest and expertise in subject matter of the show
  • Video production experience
  • Proficiency and strong interest in engaging listeners via social media or other digital platforms

KQED Inc. is a non-profit public media outlet based in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, which operates the radio station KQED-FM and the television stations KQED/KQET and KQEH. KQED's main headquarters are located in San Francisco and its Silicon Valley office is located in San Jose. In 2019 the San Francisco headquarters broke ground on a 90 million renovation project, which was completed in late 2021. Improvements included a larger newsroom and studio and a top floor outdoor terrace. The heart of the KQED headquarters is a 238-seat multipurpose event center called The Commons. The venue hosts KQED Live, a series of lectures, concerts, discussions and other live events with entertainers, journalists, politicians, musicians, authors, chefs and others. Reopening events for the public were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
