About the OpportunitySolaris Energy operates a growing fleet of turbines and industrial equipment connected through an in-house edge software platform running on AWS IoT Greengrass. This platform currently integrates with Allen-Bradley PLCs over EtherNet/IP and is expanding to support Woodward and RX3i controllers via OPC-UA, with additional equipment types (SERs, switchgears, and others) planned for future onboarding.
We are hiring a dedicated engineer to own this platform end-to-end: PLC/device integration, Greengrass deployment and configuration, and the ongoing architecture required to onboard new equipment types reliably and at scale.
Solaris is scaling its data-driven operations across turbine and fleet infrastructure. This platform is the connective layer between physical equipment and the analytics/AI systems being built on top of it. This is a build-and-own opportunity for someone who wants deep ownership of industrial systems integration - you will be the primary technical owner of software that keeps mission-critical infrastructure connected and monitored in the field.
Essential Functions- Full lifecycle ownership of the edge software platform: architecture, development, deployment, and field configuration
- Design and implementation of protocol integrations (EtherNet/IP, OPC-UA) connecting PLCs and industrial controllers to our cloud data platform
- Ongoing equipment onboarding as Solaris expands connectivity to new device types (turbines, SCRs, switchgears, and future additions)
- AWS IoT Greengrass deployment, versioning, and remote configuration management across distributed field locations
- Technical partnership with our Sr. Staff Software Engineer on architectural direction, and with data engineering on how edge telemetry flows into Snowflake and downstream systems
- Direct evaluation and technical oversight of any third-party vendors engaged for edge platform expansion work
- On-site presence at Houston-area facilities and periodic travel to field/turbine sites for deployment, hardware integration, and troubleshooting
Experience/Education- 5+ years of software engineering experience, with direct experience in industrial/OT environments, SCADA integration, or edge computing
- Hands-on experience with industrial protocols: EtherNet/IP, OPC-UA required; Modbus or other OT protocols a plus
- Experience with AWS IoT Greengrass, IoT Core, or comparable edge computing platforms
- Strong systems-level programming background (Python, C#, or similar) with experience building and maintaining production integrations
- Comfort owning infrastructure that operates in remote, distributed, and sometimes constrained network environments
- Experience working directly with PLC/HMI hardware (Allen-Bradley, Woodward, GE RX3i, or similar) strongly preferred
- Willingness and ability to travel periodically to field sites as equipment onboarding requires
- Ability to work independently with minimal ramp support
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
Key Skills and Qualifications- Exceptional communicator - direct and transparent, skilled problem-solver with proven success in building coalitions and avoiding conflicts
- Total ownership mentality - proactively identifies and removes obstacles across numerous ongoing tasks
- Independent thinker - provides original thoughts and constantly asking "how can we do this better"
- Innovative thinker - willingness to consider novel solutions and ability to adapt to change
- Desirable teammate - impeccable character, humility, and collaborative
- Relentless - aspires to contribute and achieve his/her full potential
