What is the Opportunity?

As part of a major payment modernization initiative, Royal Bank of Canada is seeking a senior developer to actively to contribute to the evolution and modernization for our next-generation payment engine. This is a critical platform which will at the end of the multi-year roadmap, process over $140 trillion dollars of wire payments a year. You will be building critical components of a robust, scalable, and resilient backend system - creating high-performance, event-driven microservices using Java and Spring Boot.

What You'll Do
  • Develops and tests software solutions, frameworks, and tools of moderate complexity, ensuring alignment with business requirements and technical standards.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to design and implement solutions to resolve moderately complex issues and improve processes.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior team members, fostering skill development and ensuring adherence to best practices.
  • Analyze system requirements and contributes to the creation of technical strategies, offering recommendations to enhance functionality and operational efficiency.
  • Lead software development tasks or projects requiring advanced problem solving and decision making, navigating ambiguity.
  • Drives decisions on issues requiring innovative thinking and technical expertise and providing recommendations that influence own team and across other work areas.
  • Resolve software development related problems independently by identifying areas for improvement and implementing solutions that enhance efficiency within scope of responsibility.
  • Maintains and enhances relationships with internal teams and external contacts to deliver measurable business outcomes.
  • Assess and analyze business and technical requirements to provide estimates on activities/tasks and establish detailed plans and timelines.
  • Working within the DevOps pipeline to deliver services across multiple environments
  • Identifying risks, dependencies, assumptions and constraints that could impede any deliverables.
  • Code and test for functions of low to high complexity.
  • Create, update and contribute to critical documentation relevant to the projects (TDD, Test Plans, Implementation Plans, etc.) as well as security and architecture requirements as defined by each project
  • Effectively communicate and build rapport with team members, various IT partners, and business partners


What You Need to Succeed

Must Have:
  • 2-5+ years of backend development experience
  • Strong hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot framework
  • Deep understanding of microservices architecture and distributed systems
  • Practical experience with reactive and event-based programming
  • Proficiency with RESTful API design, Git, and CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins)
  • Strong experience with automated testing (e.g., JUnit, Mockito)
  • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies


Nice-to-Have:
  • Experience with messaging systems like IBM MQ or Apache Kafka
  • Knowledge of microservice resiliency patterns (circuit breakers, back pressure)
  • Familiarity with Spec-Kit
  • Familiarity with Docker, containerization (Kubernetes/OpenShift), and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Experience with monitoring and logging tools (e.g., Splunk, Dynatrace, ELK stack)
  • Knowledge of the banking or financial services domain, especially payment systems
