Job Summary:We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Senior Cost Accountant to join our finance team at a fast-paced Contract Manufacturing Organization (CMO) specializing in vitamins, minerals, and dietary supplements. This role is crucial in ensuring accurate product costing, margin analysis, inventory valuation, and supporting pricing strategies. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in manufacturing cost accounting, with a particular focus on process manufacturing and BOM-based costing models common in the VMS industry.
Key Responsibilities:- Costing & Inventory Accounting:
- Develop and maintain accurate standard costs, Bills of Materials (BOM), and routing data
- Analyze manufacturing variances (labor, material, overhead) and recommend corrective actions
- Perform monthly and quarterly inventory valuation and reconcile inventory accounts
- Review and analyze purchase price variances, production order variances, and scrap
- Review and finalize closing of work orders and jobs weekly
- Financial Reporting & Analysis:
- Support monthly close by preparing journal entries and cost of goods sold (COGS) analysis
- Partner with Operations and Supply Chain teams to analyze and forecast manufacturing costs
- Generate and distribute weekly production and inventory reports
- Operational Support:
- Participate in the development of annual budgets and standard cost roll-ups
- Collaborate with QA, R&D, and Production to understand cost impacts from formulation changes
- Identify and implement cost control opportunities and process improvements
- Compliance & Audit Support:
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and company policies
- Support external and internal audits by preparing required documentation and analyses
Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5+ years of cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment, ideally in VMS, pharma, nutraceuticals, or food & beverage
- Strong understanding of standard costing, BOMs, inventory control, and ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, SysPro, SAP, Oracle, or similar)
- Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical mindset
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with operations, R&D, and sales teams
- Experience with process manufacturing or batch production a plus
- Minimal travel to SoCal plants for support
