As a Senior Consultant, you'll investigate complex and confidential issues involving fraud, financial reporting, securities law compliance, senior executive misconduct or other allegations that associates or agents are not in compliance with laws, regulations or company policies. You'll collaborate with leaders and business units to plan, develop, coordinate and implement approved programs to protect corporate assets.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Investigates to identify the presence or absence of criminal activity related to company loss of assets and to detect and prevent company loss.
  • Acts as the primary investigator of allegations against appointed/elected individuals.
  • Consults with and advises management on fraudulent activity and makes recommendations to prevent or reduce potential loss. Produces comprehensive, written investigative summaries and presents to Associate Relations, Ethics, General Counsel and business unit leadership.
  • Maintains expertise in current investigative techniques involving fiscal crimes and fiscal irregularities being experienced by insurance and financial institutions. Develops and recommends investigative techniques to improve detection and investigation of fiscal crimes.
  • Analyzes large-scale fraud or criminal acts involving actual or attempted loss and shares information on fraud risk and exposures.
  • Assists the company and civil authorities in the prosecution and/or defense of alleged associate criminal activities involving company loss of assets. Testifies in criminal, civil and administrative procedures. Builds and maintains rapport and partnership with federal, state and local government agencies that can assist in investigative efforts.
  • Develops and presents training programs to engage associates and management in preventing, detecting and reporting possible theft, fraud, embezzlement or misappropriation of assets.
  • Conducts investigations at the request of the Office of General Counsel in anticipation of possible litigation.
  • Investigates fraudulent misuse of Nationwide names, brand or trademarks. Manages investigations involving contract, compliance or business practice violations, external vendor fraud and identity theft.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of insurance and financial operations within Nationwide. Analyzes management guides and business processes to ensure alignment with corporate policies and local/state/federal laws and regulations.
  • Mentors and coaches Consultants providing guidance on the operations of the Internal Investigations Unit, investigative strategies and techniques and business operations.
  • Maintains a current knowledge of the company's policies and practices, local/state and federal laws to ensure that investigative efforts are in compliance with all.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Director. This is an individual contributor role.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Degree in insurance, criminal justice, business administration or law preferred. Graduate level studies desirable. Prefer industry anti-fraud designations such as CFE, CIFI, AEI, etc. and industry-related designations such as CPCU, CLU, etc. Maintains certifications in investigative techniques such as interviewing, etc.

Experience: Typically, 10 years of related experience in insurance operations, five of which involve the investigation of insurance-related crimes.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Comprehensive and in-depth understanding of insurance operations across all companies/business units; company policies and practices; investigative, interviewing and intelligence techniques; rules of civil and criminal law; rules and practices of the judicial system; and program and project administration. Proven verbal and written communication skills for interaction with associates, various civil authorities and others. Demonstrated ability to independently identify, analyze and resolve problems based on supporting facts and to recommend solutions to prevent recurrence. Able to work with attorneys, senior management and law enforcement authorities to prepare for testifying in a court of law. Proven ability to think creatively and innovatively.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Working Conditions: Ability to handle self in potential dangerous situations. Ability to travel throughout' the United States and be away from home overnight (up to 50%). Occasional extended and non-standard business hours based on business need.
