Sr. Compliance Engineer

Department: Engineering - Video

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Austin

Reporting To: Brad Huber

Compensation: $140,000 - $155,000 / year

Description

As a Compliance Engineer, you will act as the technical subject-matter expert for global product compliance, product safety, EMC, environmental, energy efficiency, and wireless certifications across Brivo's hardware portfolio (consumer electronics, enterprise servers, networking equipment, and commercial hardware). You will define market-access strategies, partner with cross-functional engineering teams from concept through end-of-life, and manage relationships with external testing laboratories and Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs).

Key Responsibilities
  • Market-Access & Regulatory Strategy: Develop global compliance strategies, country-by-country certification matrices, budgets, and schedules for target markets. Differentiate between mandatory requirements and value-add optional certifications (e.g., ENERGY STAR, EPEAT).
  • Product Safety & NRTL Certifications: Lead safety certifications with NRTLs (UL, MET, Intertek/ETL, CSA, TÜV) applying hazard-based safety engineering standards (such as IEC/UL/CSA 62368-1). Perform construction reviews, manage fault/thermal testing, evaluate safety-critical components, and support factory surveillance audits.
  • International Regulatory Approvals: Manage CE marking, UKCA, CB Scheme leverage, and regional market access across global regions (North America, LATAM, APAC, EMEA) through local representatives and in-country testing where required.
  • EMC, Wireless & Energy Compliance: Coordinate emissions/immunity testing (FCC, ISED, CE EMC) and global radio approvals for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, and NFC modules. Oversee energy efficiency and telecom interface compliance.
  • Environmental & Materials Compliance: Direct substance and recycling compliance programs including RoHS, REACH, WEEE, California Prop 65, and Conflict Minerals with supply chain and quality teams.
  • NPD & Technical Design Guidance: Translate regulatory standards into actionable engineering requirements during early-stage product architecture. Conduct pre-compliance design reviews (schematics, PCB layouts, power architectures, enclosures) and lead root-cause analysis for test failures.
  • Documentation & Configuration Control: Maintain technical construction files, Declarations of Conformity (DoC), regulatory labeling, user manual warnings, and certified bill-of-materials (BOM) traceability throughout the product lifecycle.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience: 7+ years of experience in product compliance, regulatory engineering, or product safety certification for hardware/electronics.
  • Safety & Testing: Hands-on experience obtaining NRTL certifications (UL, MET, ETL, CSA, TÜV) and managing testing with third-party labs.
  • Global Frameworks: Strong knowledge of global regulatory schemes, including CE marking, FCC, ISED, and international market-access procedures.
  • Technical Acumen: Ability to read and evaluate electrical schematics, PCB layouts, mechanical drawings, and component specifications.
  • Project Leadership: Proven ability to manage multiple certification projects, budgets, and laboratory schedules simultaneously.
  • Travel: Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed to test labs, manufacturing sites, and vendor facilities.
  • Deep expertise in IEC/UL/CSA 62368-1 and hazard-based safety engineering.
  • Experience certifying rack-mounted servers, enterprise networking products, data-center hardware, power supplies, or battery systems.
  • Direct experience with wireless module integration, global radio approvals, and the CB Scheme process.
  • Familiarity with voluntary environmental programs (ENERGY STAR, EPEAT, TCO Certified, 80 PLUS).
  • Professional certification or formal training in Product Safety, EMC, or Risk Management.

The compensation for this full time salaried role ranges between $140,000-$155,000. Individual compensation packages are based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, training, and market conditions. In addition, Brivonians enjoy a robust benefits and perks package tailored to their work location.
