We are seeking a
Sr. Biostatistician who will be responsible for data management and analysis of multicenter clinical trials. The Sr. Biostatistician will supervise research data analysts and work with principal investigators to analyze and manage data from studies.
The Syphilis and HIV Integrated Epidemiologic and Economic Local-level Dynamics (SHIELD) project is a suite of compartmental transmission models covering 40 U.S. cities with the highest rates of syphilis and HIV diagnoses. SHIELD encompasses syphilis transmission dynamics and natural history, HIV co-infection, STI care engagement, and key demographic stratifications. Modeling assumptions are grounded in epidemiological and clinical literature, and model parameters are calibrated against available surveillance data, including national STI case report data and behavioral surveillance. The model is designed to evaluate the epidemiological impact and cost-effectiveness of scaling up existing and emerging syphilis interventions, including expanded testing, partner services, treatment acceleration, and doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxy-PEP).
SHIELD is closely linked to the Johns Hopkins Epidemiologic and Economic Model (JHEEM), a rigorous, statistically grounded simulation platform that projects the impact of HIV-related interventions at the city and state level across the United States. JHEEM addresses high-level public health questions - such as how much increasing HIV testing and treatment uptake would reduce incidence over a decade - using large-scale Bayesian model fitting and simulation. Both models are coded in R and executed on high-performance cloud computing infrastructure. JHEEM projections are publicly accessible at https://jhu-comp-epi.vercel.app.
The successful candidate will be embedded within the SHIELD team and will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with the broader JHEEM research group. Depending on project priorities and the candidate's expertise, there is flexibility to contribute across both modeling platforms-spanning areas such as HIV intervention modeling, syphilis-HIV co-infection dynamics, cost-effectiveness analysis, and the development of decision-support tools for public health practitioners. We are seeking a motivated, intellectually curious individual who is eager to apply biostatistical methods, epidemiological expertise and computational skills to help end the HIV and syphilis epidemics.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities- Work with a multidisciplinary group on clinical trials and other longitudinal studies.
- Collaborate with investigators on research projects with primary responsibility for analysis and presentation of project data.
- Provide integration and analysis of biodata from multiple sources.
- Provide expertise in statistical design, data management, and data analysis.
- Contribute to the development and application of statistical methods to advance scientific goals of various projects.
- Serve as lead Biostatistician with investigators to develop objectives, design sampling, randomization, and statistical analysis plans to achieve study objectives.
- Design and perform appropriate methodologic procedures for statistical analysis, overall descriptive statistics, exploratory data analyses, including graphs, schematic summaries, and necessary transformations and confirmatory data analyses, including statistical tests and/or modeling.
- Design, implement, and manage computerized systems for analysis of complex research projects to prepare scientific presentations related to study results.
- Perform sample size and power calculations, generate randomization schema, and prepare statistical sections for research protocols and manuscripts.
- Participate in regularly scheduled meetings with investigators and team that require statistical input.
- Design tables and statistical procedures for specific research studies.
- Write statistical design, methods, and analysis for manuscripts and research proposals.
- Analyze data and prepare tables for interim and final reports.
- Develop and apply new statistical methodologies.
- Ensure data integrity and compliance with security policies governed by HIPAA and the Johns Hopkins IRB.
- Oversight of one or more professional team members and project milestones.
- Prepare progress reports and present to leadership.
- Other duties as assigned.
In addition to the duties described above:
- Independently apply and adapt calibrated HIV and syphilis transmission models to address specific epidemiological and public health research questions, including defining model scenarios, assumptions, outcomes, and sensitivity analyses. Translate epidemiological evidence, surveillance data, and scientific questions into model parameters, computational analyses, and interpretable results for use in federally funded research and public health applications.
- Provide scientific and technical leadership to programmers and quantitative staff implementing complex simulation models, including defining model specifications, reviewing code and outputs, troubleshooting analyses, and ensuring reproducibility and scientific validity.
- Lead the integration of Bayesian statistical methods, model calibration, uncertainty analysis, and validation into epidemiological modeling studies.
- Contribute substantively to high-priority HIV and infectious disease modeling projects through independent analysis, interpretation of results, scientific manuscripts, grant applications, and technical reports, including co-authoring scientific manuscripts, conference abstracts, technical reports, and other scholarly products, contributing substantive analysis, interpretation, and methodological content.
- Conduct systematic reviews of epidemiological and clinical literature relevant to HIV and syphilis transmission, natural history, and intervention effectiveness and extract, critically appraise, and synthesize parameter values (e.g., transmission probabilities, treatment efficacy, and care cascade estimates) from peer-reviewed literature and surveillance and programmatic data sources, including the CDC, local health departments, and national databases (e.g., NHBS, NNDSS).
Minimum Qualifications- Master's Degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or related quantitative field.
- Three years of related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications- Proficiency in R and other programming languages.
- Proficiency in Bayesian inference methods.
