Full Job Description
About the team and the role:

We are the Fashion Vertical Engineering team within eBay's Global Focused Category Organization. Our work spans eBay's most critical surfaces-including the Homepage, My eBay, Vertical Experiences, and high-impact Growth products.

We own the technology behind eBay's Trust programs for luxury fashion, protecting multi-billion dollar annual GMV. Additionally, we drive zero-to-one initiatives that leverage innovative AI to transform personalized discovery and the upper-funnel shopping journey. You will partner with elite engineers, data scientists, and product leaders to build high-volume, resilient distributed systems on one of the world's most visited platforms.

We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer for the Fashion Vertical team. In this high-impact role, you will provide the technical vision for our Trust business programs and AI-powered innovations.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you won't just write code; you will drive establishment of E2E pipelines that manage sophisticated system behaviors across the entire e-commerce workflow. You will bridge the gap between domain partners, Science team and Product, owning the integration of advanced algos into scalable, personalized user experiences. We are looking for a self-motivated leader who thrives in agile environments and is committed to engineering excellence.

What you will accomplish:
  • Architectural Leadership: Translate complex business requirements into scalable software designs. Create clean, extensible, and maintainable codebases that serve as a standard for the organization.
  • E2E Ownership: Drive the full software lifecycle for large-scale domains, ensuring excellence in design, development, testing, and 24/7 observability.
  • Technical Influence: Act as a key decision-maker for the team's technology stack, guiding peers and partners toward robust, future-proof technical solutions.
  • Engineering Velocity: Identify areas of high volatility and design flexible systems to minimize technical debt and accelerate delivery speed.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Partner with multi-functional leaders (Product, Design, Eng, Science) to define and implement innovative roadmaps that align with global business goals.
  • Quality: Champion testable architectures and continuous delivery practices to ensure the highest levels of system reliability.
  • Execution & Mentorship: Break down sophisticated projects into executable landmarks. Provide deep technical coaching, high-standard code reviews, and mentorship to elevate the engineering bar across the team.
  • Systems Thinking: Proactively identify gaps across functional areas, propose long-term engineering roadmaps, and drive the resolution of systemic issues.
  • Operational Excellence: Lead the strategy for E2E testing, release management, and on-call support for our "always-on" global platform.

What you will bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in EE, CS or other related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in working in Java, GraphQL, Spring/Springboot, REST APIs, messaging systems and/or other backend programming languages
  • Building data-driven applications (RDBMS, NoSQL, ElasticSearch)
  • Delivers results in fast-paced environments (agile, TDD, CI/CD)
  • Outstanding ability to navigate technical trade-offs, making high-stakes decisions that balance immediate business needs with long-term architectural health.
  • Strong sense of E2E ownership with the ability to align multi-functional teams and mentor junior engineers toward technical growth.
  • Experience with recommendation system or data pipeline is a plus but not required
