Specialist, Treasury — Cash Management

Nationwide's Treasury team is seeking a Specialist to support the financial operations and cash management functions. This position plays a critical role in managing cash flows, liquidity, banking services and payment activity across a large, complex insurance and financial services organization. The team operates in a highly automated, systematic environment that combines real-time cash positioning and investing with high-value, moderate-volume transaction processing. Team members also have opportunities to broaden their treasury expertise through rotational assignments in areas such as bank relationship and account management, debt financing, and emerging payment and collection processes.

About the Position

Reporting the Director of Treasury, the Specialist, will help ensure cash is positioned effectively, payments and transfers are executed accurately, and liquidity is managed in support of business needs. This role is well suited for an intellectually curious finance professional who enjoys combining analysis, operational execution, process improvement and cross-functional partnership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor daily cash positions, opening account balances and related file interfaces; investigate and resolve balance or file-feed exceptions.
  • Process and validate cash transactions, including wires, ACH, cross-border payments, foreign exchange trades, transfers and batch transactions, in accordance with established controls and procedures.
  • Balance the internal cash management pool, calculate daily interest and expense allocations, and partner with Short-Term Investments on related investing activities.
  • Maintain cash-flow forecasts and operational reporting; analyze forecast-to-actual results to identify trends and emerging needs.
  • Support banking services and account administration, including implementing new services, opening or closing accounts, and monitoring banking costs and fee drivers.
  • Prepare and monitor short- and long-term debt roll-forwards, funding data, liquidity advances and rating-agency requests.
  • Partner with business teams and banking partners to assess access needs, implement solutions and support projects or transformational efforts involving cash and payment processing.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows, strengthen controls and enhance treasury operations; stay current on treasury practices and payment innovations.
  • Contribute to data-integration monitoring and troubleshooting, disaster-recovery planning and testing, and other department initiatives.

Qualifications & Competencies:

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, economics, banking or a related field.
  • Previous professional experience in treasury and cash management; experience in an accounting or finance related position is highly transferrable.
  • Related experience in finance, accounting, information technology, banking or project management is valuable.
  • Experience with daily cash positioning, electronic funds transfers, liquidity management, bank cash-flow analysis or treasury workstation processes is beneficial.
  • Strong analytical, logical and general business-analysis skills, including proficiency with Excel.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles, economics, financial analysis, banking, treasury and investment operations.
  • Familiarity with process analysis, system requirements, or utilization of Treasury Management platform.
  • Detail-oriented, control-minded and adaptable, with strong follow-through and curiosity.
  • Ability to solve problems, manage competing priorities and work effectively across functions.
  • Demonstrated skill working under pressure - comfortable to problem solve and resolve unexpected errors or discrepancies that may occur with regular, time-sensitive processes.

As a Specialist you'll be tasked with the daily cash management, liquidity and forecasting, banking services, security administration operations and/or special projects for the company. Your responsibilities will vary, depending on the specific focus of the Treasury area assigned to and may flex according to the needs of the department or team assigned.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Conducts cash positioning duties by monitoring opening account balances and related internal/external file interfaces. Handles any exceptions in balance or file feeds. Advises other Treasury teams as necessary. 

  • Makes cash transactions, including foreign exchange trades and transfers, batch transactions and business unit wires that have entered directly into the Treasury Workstation. Ensures transactions are aligned with required controls, policies and procedures.

  • Balances the internal Nationwide Cash Management Corporation pool and calculates daily interest and expense allocation. Work with Short-Term Investments staff to handle related investing activities.

  • Conducts reporting and analysis activities necessary to maintain the cash flow forecast and other cash operational reporting. Reviews forecast to actual reports to identify emerging trends.

  • Assists in the maintenance of the cash flow forecast data and coordinates entries in the Treasury Workstation with data uploads into the cash flow forecast to avoid duplicate or missing entries.

  • Implements new banking services and/or opening new bank accounts, as well as canceling unneeded banking services or closing unneeded accounts. 

  • Monitors banking service costs against budgeted levels and monitors the elements resulting in the net fee: collected balances, items processed, per-item fees and earnings credit rates.

  • Prepares and monitors long-term and short-term debt roll forward, data administration and analysis for debt funding agreements as well as liquidity advances and rating agency surveys.

  • Partners with businesses to assess banking access needs and identify appropriate solutions. Prepares the necessary documents, obtains required approvals, communicates to banking partners and initiates access.

  • Coordinates businesses in executing project or transformational efforts that involve cash or bank transaction processing.

  • Stays current on treasury practices and innovations that may impact the company or result in better workflow, enhanced company operations or customer experience.

  • Coordinates department-wide disaster recovery planning and testing.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Treasury Manager.

Typical Skills and Experiences: 

Education: Undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, economics, banking or other related area.

License/Certification/Designation: Certified Treasury Professional (CTP) designation, or progress toward completion, is preferred.

Experience: Typically, five to eight years of experience in treasury and cash management. Experience in finance, accounting, information technology, banking and/or project management is also desirable.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Proven knowledge of accounting principles, economics and financial analysis. Understanding of insurance operations and terminology and banking, treasury and investment operations. Also knowledge of system development lifecycle and system requirements and process analysis. Detail oriented, analytical, able to work independently, operational improvement and control-minded and adaptable. Ability to problem solve, strong organizational skills, ability to manage high volumes of work while efficiently juggling multiple tasks. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
