Job Description:
The Software Engineer III is a versatile and experienced software professional who contributes across multiple domains, including graphical user interface development for test systems, embedded software for controllers, and establishing a new software engineering lab environment. This role combines hands-on software development with infrastructure planning, process definition, and cross-functional collaboration. The ideal candidate is adaptable, resourceful, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift based on program needs.
Essential Functions:
Graphical User Interface Development (Test Systems)
• Design and develop intuitive, reliable graphical user interfaces for engineering test systems, data acquisition environments, or operator consoles.
• Collaborate with test engineers to gather user requirements, optimize workflows, and improve usability.
• Integrate GUIs with back-end systems, test frameworks, and hardware interfaces.
• Ensure maintainability, scalability, and clear documentation of user-facing software components.
Embedded Software Development (Controllers)
• Design, develop, and test embedded software for controllers or hardware-interfacing systems.
• Work closely with systems and hardware engineers to ensure correct functionality, timing, and safety behaviors.
• Develop low-level drivers, communication interfaces, and control logic.
• Support hardware-in-the-loop testing and system integration activities.
Software Lab Infrastructure & Administration
• Lead the setup, configuration, and ongoing maintenance of a new software lab environment, including computer resources, tools, networks, and workflows.
• Define and implement processes for lab access, security, configuration management, build pipelines, and continuous integration.
• Develop lab documentation, standards, and training materials for cross-functional engineering teams.
• Coordinate with IT, cybersecurity, systems engineering, and hardware labs to ensure compliance and seamless integration.
General Engineering Responsibilities
• Participate in requirements gathering, design reviews, and technical discussions across the engineering organization.
• Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers.
• Conduct code reviews, ensure adherence to standards, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
• Troubleshoot issues across GUI, embedded, and lab infrastructure domains.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• 5-8 years of professional software development experience spanning at least two of the following areas:
- GUI development (Qt, WPF, JavaFX, web UI frameworks, LabVIEW)
- Embedded software (C, C++, real-time systems, microcontrollers)
- Software infrastructure, DevOps, or lab/toolchain administration
• Strong proficiency in one or more languages such as Python, C++, or C#.
• Experience with CI/CD systems, Git-based workflows, automated testing frameworks, and modern build systems.
• Proven ability to adapt across different problem domains and learn new technologies quickly.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Additional Skills:
• Experience in aerospace, defense, or other mission-critical engineering environments.
• Background in establishing new engineering labs or development environments.
• Experience designing operator interfaces or engineering test GUIs.
• Familiarity with hardware-in-the-loop testing, embedded control systems, or system integration labs.
• Knowledge of secure development practices and compliance requirements.
• Experience with SQL databases and data management to support storage, organization, and retrieval of lab-generated data.
