Description

The software engineer works with leads and senior engineers within an Agile team. In this role, the software engineer can expect to design, develop, implement, and maintain Java based applications using Java/REST API/REACT/ javascript/SQL and integrate with mySQL, postgres, and IBM UDB databases. The software engineer is also expected to accept coaching, seek training, participate in upskilling activities, and learn the area with an eye on progressing to senior levels. Additionally, the software engineer will provide guidance to Guardian's production support teams. The software engineer can expect to participate in modernization efforts for a variety of Group Benefits applications, which includes integration with our AI solutions to automate Underwriting processes and the eventual replacement of the existing legacy platforms.

You will join a team that is part of a SAFe Agile Release Train. In this position, you will be expected to partner with developers located in both the US and India.

You Will:
  • Receive training and knowledge transfer from Java developers, the current team lead, and SMEs to accelerate your transition into the software engineer role.
  • Work with our AI and automation teams to provide a "quote in minutes" solution for our Underwriting teams.
  • Assist in troubleshooting application related issues such as UI performance, SQL tuning, and error analysis.
  • Engage in Proof of Concept, prototyping, and feasibility analysis to determine the best approach to requirements and problems for both modernization and business requirement efforts.
  • Attend all SAFe ceremonies and actively participate.
  • Create and maintain UDB, postgres, and mySQL stored procedures.
  • Analyze existing programs and stored procedures for refactoring opportunities.
  • Recommend improvements by studying current practices and proposing/designing modifications.
  • Collaborate and communicate with all developers and stakeholders within the train.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and reviewing professional publications.


Qualifications

You Have:
  • 2-4 years of experience and excellent programming skills using Java, Rest API, REACT, jquery, javascript, postgres/mySQL/IBM UDB.
  • Experience with AI assistants such as Claude Code and/or Github Co-pilot
  • Exposure and experience with IBM UDB, postgre, and mySQL stored procedures and utilities.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related discipline.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with Agile Software Development Life Cycle using Kanban, Scrum, or the Scaled Agile Framework.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Development experience in a cross-platform and multi-tier environment.
  • Critical thinking skills, ability to define problems, establish facts and draw conclusions.
  • A strong drive and willingness to grow beyond your current position and responsibilities.


Nice to Have:
  • AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification.
  • Experience with process automation.
  • Experience in performance testing and tuning.
  • Scrum team experience.
  • Knowledge of group insurance.

Salary Range:

$67,980.00 - $101,970.00

The salary range reflected above is a good faith estimate of base pay for the primary location of the position. The salary for this position ultimately will be determined based on the education, experience, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. In addition to salary, this role may also be eligible for annual, sales, or other incentive compensation.
