Project/Unit Description The Test Engineering Division (TEN), part of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS), specializes in applied research to advance Test and Evaluation (T&E) methodologies for Department of Defense (DoD) systems. With a core emphasis on Electronic Warfare (EW) and related technologies, TEN excels in developing sophisticated software-in-the-loop (SITL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) test systems. These systems generate a realistic and complex electromagnetic spectrum consistent with the challenges of tomorrow's battlespace that facilitate open-loop and closed-loop testing, system simulation/emulation, test automation, and comprehensive data analysis. Key research activities include T&E across the Radio Frequency (RF) and Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) spectrums, enabling high-fidelity testing of land, airborne, maritime, and spaceborne systems to ensure innovative solutions for diverse defense challenges.
Job Purpose The Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests software applications and products. Additionally, the Software Engineer manages software development teams, provides technical leadership, and establishes software development lifecycle practices and processes. The Software Engineer is proficient in programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, C, C++, C#, Ruby, Python, Scala, and Groovy. In this role, the Software Engineer requires extensive knowledge of programming languages, software development, computer operating systems, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), DevOps, Application Programming Interface (API) development, container development, and distributed systems. The Software Engineer also applies engineering principles to software creation, manages production releases of software, performs code reviews, merges feature development branches, and analyzes and triages issues. The necessary skill areas for the Software Engineer include programming and coding, fundamentals of computer science, software design and architecture development, algorithms and data structures, information analysis, software debugging and testing, and working on development teams. The Software Engineer also works with sponsors to curate requirements, define sprint work items, set priorities for work backlogs, and organize development teams.
Key Responsibilities - Perform software development, debugging, modification, enhancement, and documentation
- Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts
- Contribute to technical reports and presentations
Additional Responsibilities Apply expertise in computing systems to define requirements and develop software designs recognizing limitations of target hardware platforms
Required Minimum Qualifications - Experience with one or more of the following languages: C/C++, C# (WPF with .NET and knowledge of MVVM), Javascript/Typescript, and/or Python
- Experience developing on/for Windows and Linux operating systems.
Preferred Qualifications - Active Top Secret Clearance
- Experience with highly performant software design, including high-bandwidth and low-latency compute architectures and acceleration techniques (e.g. GPU or FPGA offload, or software development on bare-metal and real-time operating systems)
- Knowledge of computer architectures as it relates to embedded hardware and communications standards, e.g., Ethernet, PCI Express
- Experience with embedded systems development and DoD open-architecture standards
- Experience with digital signal processing
- Experience with software development and collaboration tools such as GitLab and Atlassian
