Full Job Description
Position Summary

The Software Deployment Engineer I/II is an individual-contributor role responsible for the end-to-end delivery, configuration, installation, and support of Kommand warehouse execution/control systems and related material handling hardware (pick-to-light, overhead illuminators, AutoStore, and T-sort integrations). This role owns project-level system configuration, commissioning, installation, upgrade, and live troubleshooting work independently, with minimal oversight, across both on-site and remote/office phases of the project lifecycle. It combines software commissioning, hardware coordination, database scripting, environment configuration, and formal test/sign-off responsibilities that have historically been distributed across multiple roles and a dedicated installation team.

This position carries broadened scope following the consolidation of hardware installation and commissioning functions previously performed by a dedicated Systems Integration & Commissioning (SI&C) team, which has since been dissolved. The Software Deployment Engineer I/II is expected to operate as the primary and, in several functions, sole point of ownership for the responsibilities outlined below.

Key Responsibilities

On-Site Delivery
  • Lead software commissioning of Kommand and peripheral hardware systems at customer sites; serve as primary technical owner, with hardware-side support from junior/peer staff.
  • Own full-scope installation of pick-to-light systems, including wiring, physical installation, configuration, and functional testing - a scope absorbed from the former SI&C team.
  • Own full-scope installation of overhead illuminator systems, following the same end-to-end responsibility as above.
  • Conduct IQ (Installation Qualification) and UAT (User Acceptance Testing) following installation, including preparation of formal test documentation and customer sign-off.
  • Serve as the sole owner of Kommand and system-level troubleshooting for live, in-production issues during on-site engagements.

Remote / Office Delivery
  • Independently deliver new Kommand installations, including application pre-configuration, database scripting, and pre-deployment testing. Sole personnel on this workstream, currently managing 4 upcoming and 1 active installation.
  • Independently deliver Kommand version upgrades, including SSDT (SQL Server Data Tools) schema comparisons, version control, local pre-install testing, and direct customer coordination. Sole personnel on this workstream, with approximately 22 major upgrades planned in the current year.
  • Production upgrade execution is performed after standard business hours to minimize customer downtime.
  • DEV, QA, and Sandbox environment work is performed during standard business hours.
  • Validate, diagnose, and remediate reported defects; route confirmed fixes to QA prior to merge and deployment. Escalation to other engineering resources is rare.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation covering Kommand, AutoStore, and T-sort system escalations.
  • Provide post-go-live project support on an as-needed basis, including system migrations (e.g., bin/location migrations), integration testing with customer ERP/WMS platforms (e.g., SAP/WMS), and multi-site rollout support.

Project Configuration & Deployment
  • Gather all Kommand configurations and system parameters required for a given project.
  • Translate the Business Requirements Document (BRD) and customer conversations into the Kommand system settings spreadsheet, network spreadsheet, and system parameters.
  • Educate the client on use of the host interface.
  • Not required for all projects - dependent on whether the customer's integration involves interface changes (e.g., AutoCase, Pack & Hold).
  • Configure the client's Kommand sandbox environment to be project-specific for customer testing, and support the client through that testing.
  • Configure the Kommand production environment ahead of go-live.
  • Assist with training on any new features requiring customer or internal education.

Scope & Independence

This role currently operates as the sole owner of several critical workstreams, including all new Kommand installations, all Kommand upgrade delivery, and all live Kommand/system troubleshooting. The role requires the judgment and technical depth to manage customer-facing delivery, testing, and sign-off without a dedicated support team, and to make sound decisions under time pressure during after-hours production changes and live escalations.

Requirements
  • Demonstrated experience commissioning warehouse execution/control software and associated hardware peripherals.
  • Working knowledge of SQL Server-based application environments, including SSDT schema comparison and version control practices.
  • Experience with formal software testing methodology (IQ/UAT), including documentation and customer sign-off processes.
  • Ability to independently diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve live production issues under time pressure.
  • Comfort with hands-on installation work (wiring, hardware configuration) for pick-to-light and overhead illumination systems, or willingness/ability to develop this competency.
  • Willingness to work after hours and participate in an on-call rotation.
  • Ability to translate business requirements documentation and customer conversations into structured system configuration (settings, network, and parameter specifications).
  • Strong customer-facing communication skills; comfortable coordinating directly with customer stakeholders during upgrades, go-live support, and system/interface training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience with AutoStore and/or T-sort systems.
  • Experience with ERP/WMS integration testing (e.g., SAP).
  • Background in material handling, warehouse automation, or industrial controls environments.
