The salary range for this position is:
  • Recruitment range: $80,369 to $88,612. Starting salary is determined in accordance with the PEA Collective Agreement.
  • Performance range: Up to $104,529. Progression beyond the recruitment range is available through annual performance increases, in accordance with the PEA Collective Agreement.


Job Summary

Mandate:

Reporting to the Manager, Marketing and Communications, the Social Media and News Coordinator plays an integral role in UCAM's mandate to communicate UVic's vision and achieve its strategic objectives. Through social media strategy, content creation, and news coordination and distribution, they promote and protect UVic's brand as one of Canada's leading research-intensive universities. Their work raises UVic's profile, reputation and brand affinity and contributes to the success of institutional channels.

Objectives:
  • Centrally coordinate, create, adapt and distribute UVic's key institutional stories across the university's central communications channels
  • Oversee the UVic website news management system, maintaining established editorial and technical standards and implementing new technologies as appropriate
  • Champion the editorial and technical development of story content aligned with a strategic distribution plan established with UCAM leadership

This role requires occasional work outside of normal business hours to support events, activities and emergency response. This could include emergency and crisis communication activities such as supporting the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and/or assisting the UVic emergency response network with community-wide notifications.

Job Requirements

Requirements:
This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in communications plus minimum 5 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive and respectful working and learning environment.
  • Fluency in digital communication tactics including the development of strategic social media plans
  • Experience creating effective social content for different audiences and a range of channels in line with strategy
  • Expert knowledge of social platforms including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, X, BlueSky, YouTube, Reddit, etc.
  • Experience with photo and video editing software such as Photoshop, XD, iMovie, Lightroom, Quik, Adobe Clip, Canva
  • Sound knowledge and experience of content management systems for social (e.g., Hootsuite, Sprout Social), project management (e.g., Asana), web (e.g., Cascade, Wordpress, etc.) and e-newsletters (e.g. Envoke)
  • Strong project management and coordination of content calendars
  • Ability to effectively track, analyze and report on metrics and key performance indicators
  • Familiarity with HTML/XHTML, CSS, web program scripting
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and tailor communication style and medium for different audiences and situations
  • Proficiency with MS-Office Suite and Adobe Create Suite
  • Ability to motivate, guide and direct others in art direction, content creation and distribution

Preferences include:
  • Specific experience with Hannon Hill's Cascade web content management system
  • Specific experience with Hootsuite social media management dashboard
  • Experience with digital trends e.g., Search Engine Optimization, AI and website accessibility
  • Experience gained in a post-secondary or similarly complex, large and unionized organization
  • Established news writing portfolio
  • Familiarity with UVic programs, policies, procedures, and business systems
