Job Description Summary
DEFINITION

Under general supervision, to perform skilled work in the alteration, repair, replacement, and maintenance of electrical and lighting systems, and to perform related work as required in other skilled trades.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Skilled Maintenance Electrician class is distinguished from other classes in the maintenance series in that work is primarily performed in the electrical trades.
The Electrician II position is distinguished from the Electrician I position by the requirement for performing advanced technical work related to the evaluation of electrical system performance, and computer data pulls.
Essential Functions & Qualifications
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS FOR POSITIONS IN THIS CLASS MAY INCLUDE:

• Coordinate, organize, and plan work from assigned work orders/requests;
• Install, maintain, and repair electric motors, lighting circuits, electrical control equipment, transformers, conduit and duct systems, and other types of electrical lighting and power equipment, including computer and telephone wiring;
• Inspect building wiring and electrical fixtures and replace old or unsafe fixtures, conduits, wiring, and switches;
• Maintain light fixtures for streets, parking, and walkways;
• Use of electrical testing equipment to trouble-shoot and repair electrical circuits, motors, relays, transformers, and related electrical systems, AC and DC circuits;
• Test, service, trouble-shoot, and repair fire alarms and clock systems; and smoke/heat detector systems;
• Repair and/or replace electrical control wiring circuits;
• Inspect, test, service, and repair emergency generators and emergency lighting systems;
• Select, order, and maintain inventory of supplies, materials, and parts;
• Use electrical testing equipment;
• Replace transformers on high voltage lines and connect building wiring to high voltage lines as needed;
• Perform a variety of functions pertaining to energy conservation;
• Estimate scope and cost of work assignments and select necessary tools and materials to complete the job;
• Work from sketches, drawings, and blueprints;
• Plan and prepare simple drawings of assigned projects;
• Prepare and work with sketches, drawings, and blueprints;
• Compile written reports and give oral reports on work;
• Operate a fork lift;
• Supervise student helpers and other workers;
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties;
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing;
• Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities;
• Perform other related duties as required.

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS SPECIFIC TO ELECTRICIAN II:

• Evaluate electrical system performance and recommend modification and/or additions;
• Provide technical support to Electrician I;
• Ability to complete and oversee completion of computer data pulls;
• Work with outside contractors pertaining to electrical system modifications.

Duties may require the physical ability to:

• see for the purpose of reading laws and codes, rules and policies, and other printed matter;
• hear and understand speech at normal levels;
• speak so that others will be able to understand a normal in-person and telephone conversation;
• sit and stand for extended periods of time;
• work off of high ladders, ladder truck, and scaffolding; and platforms;
• ascend and descend ladder;
• bend and twist, push and pull, stoop, kneel, crawl;
• reach in all directions;
• lift 100 pounds and/or carry 50 pounds.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:

• Equivalent to graduation from the twelfth grade and completion of apprenticeship or vocational training in the electrical trade. Associate degree preferred.

Experience:

• Two years of journeyman-level experience in the electrical trade or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the electrical trade, or demonstrate a working skill in the electrical trade.

Knowledge of:

• Tools, testing equipment, materials, methods, and terminology used in the electrical and lighting trades;
• Methods and practices used in the maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment;
• Safe working practices;
• National Electrical Codes, regulations and guidelines;
• Material Safety Data Sheets;
• Hazardous Communications Regulations - "Right to Know";
• Fire Prevention, codes, and extinguishers;
• Correct responses to emergency situations;
• CPR and First Aid.
• Computer programs necessary for record keeping and databases;
• Correct English usage: grammar, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation.

License and Certificates:

• Must possess a valid California Driver's License;
• Must possess a valid certificate to operate a fork lift.

The regular schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Employees who work half-time or more are entitled to receive fringe benefits. The fringe allocation is money from the District to help cover the cost of insurance. Employees working half-time or more are eligible to participate in the District's medical, dental and vision insurance.

Employees with a work assignment of 50% to 74% of full time will receive one-half of the above stated fringe allocation.

If your insurance rate exceeds your fringe allocation, the balance will be deducted from your monthly payroll check. If the insurance plans selected cost less than the fringe allocation, any excess amount will be returned to the District.
