Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

To provide anesthesia and pain management services to emergency and surgical patients of both an elective and emergency nature. On occasion may be asked to support University of Michigan Health Anesthesia needs at other UM Health locations, including but not limited to UM Health Sparrow Lansing, UM Health Sparrow Clinton, UM Health Sparrow Ionia, UM Health Sparrow Eaton, and UM Health Sparrow Carson. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
  • Supports facilities of UMH Sparrow Eaton and Ionia.
  • Provides Anesthesia Services to patients presenting themselves to Hospital.
  • Rotates on-call coverage with other members of the Medical Staff in accordance with Hospital's Medical Staff Bylaws and rules and regulations.
  • Meets periodically with the Medical Director and/or CEO to discuss the Parties' respective performance under this Agreement as well as quality improvement and efficiency issues.
  • Participates in such departmental meetings, quality management and other peer review activities that are reasonably required by the Medical Director and/or CEO.
  • Supports Hospital in its efforts to improve Hospital and its services and promote Hospital's image in the community served by Hospital.
  • Collaborates with the Medical Director and other Hospital staff in developing, maintaining and updating protocols with regard to rendering Anesthesia Services at Hospital.
  • Uses all equipment, supplies and facilities furnished by Hospital with care and uses due diligence in the detection of defects (including potential defects) and when observed, promptly report such defects to Hospital.
  • Supports and serves as a role model for the mission, vision, values and customer service initiatives. Adheres to the organization's policies & procedures, and compliance guidelines.
  • Perform all other duties that are reasonably required by Hospital from time to time.


Job Requirements

General Requirements
• Licensed to practice as a registered professional nurse in the State of Michigan. • Certified by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) as a certified registered nurse anesthetist.

Work Experience
• Minimum of one year of work experience as a RN in an acute care nursing setting. • Minimum of two years of work experience as a CRNA.

Education
• Graduate of an educational program in Nurse Anesthesia accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs and Schools.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills
• Must have good communication skills and the ability to instill confidence in patients. • Must be interested in the chemistry of pharmaceuticals and have the stamina to focus for long periods of time. • Must be able to tolerate long and irregular work hours and often required to work weekends or be on call. • Advanced knowledge of aseptic techniques, surgical procedures, instrumentation, and correct terminology • Knowledge of accrediting and regulatory standards and hospital policies related to the provision of patient care including HIPAA confidentiality and Joint Commission mandates • Written and computer skills necessary to prepare required documentation • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, and other health care professionals in the exchange of information • Mental ability to deal with the concerns and emotional needs of patients, and appropriately respond to stressful/emergency situations. • Physical ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, transfer/lift/ reposition/assist patients, and properly set-up/utilize the equipment/ devices necessary in providing patient care • Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job.
