Compensation

Salary: $125,000 - $200,000 annually total compensation
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday (weekends if available)

Position Summary

The Signal Systems Engineer will support the design, implementation, and enhancement of train control and signaling systems for rail and transit infrastructure projects. This role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams and clients to ensure signaling solutions meet safety standards, regulatory compliance, and operational goals.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Analyze, design, and commission fixed block and automatic block signaling systems, with emphasis on track circuit integration, interlocking logic, and grade crossing automation.
  • Assist in reviewing, modifying, and validating vital logic software to enhance system performance.
  • Develop functional and detailed signal system designs for both new and existing rail infrastructure, ensuring alignment with safety, operational efficiency, and regulatory requirements.
  • Implement and verify innovative signal control solutions tailored to complex transit environments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering and construction teams throughout the project lifecycle.

Conduct detailed technical analyses and documentation to support design, implementation, and testing activities.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering
    (or equivalent experience/education)
  • 5+ years of experience in rail transit signaling and train control systems
    (or equivalent experience/education)
  • In-depth knowledge of track circuit functionality and its role in train control and signaling
  • Experience in designing and implementing automatic block signaling systems
  • Strong understanding of signaling principles, including approach locking, time locking, and route locking
  • Familiar with interlocking signal operations and their integration with track circuits
  • Proven ability to design, test, and validate safety-critical signaling systems and logic control
  • Experience working with Vital Logic Software (VLS) or Vital Harmon Logic Controllers (VHLC), Relay-Based Interlockings, and Computer-Based and/or Solid-State Interlockings
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD design software
  • Familiar with CAD software such Bentley/MicroStation, REVIT, SolidWorks, or similar platforms
  • Experience modifying, testing, and commissioning railway signal control software
  • Experience with CTDOT, Metro-North, Amtrak, and MBTA projects
  • Knowledge of the Amtrak Northeast Corridor in New York City
  • Familiar with project management and design workflow tools such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Procore
  • Familiar with design-build projects
  • Experience maintaining active train operations during construction
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team
  • Highly organized with strong time management capabilities


  • Physically able to navigate construction sites
    (standing, climbing, stooping, crouching)
  • Willingness to work outdoors and conduct field surveys
  • Comfortable in all weather conditions and high-noise environments

    • CSX Track Training
    • MTA Track Training
    • OSHA 30


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Works outdoors at construction sites and indoors
  • Frequently stands, walks, climbs, balances, stoops, and crouches while negotiating work areas under construction
  • Sits, reads, writes, and uses a keyboard
  • May be exposed to harsh weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather
  • May be exposed to loud noise
