Full Job Description
Position Summary: The Sign Language Interpreter facilitates communication among deaf, hearing, and hard of hearing students, parents and staff of The American Sign Language and English Secondary School (02M047). The interpreter provides American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and/or transliteration services to ensure equitable access to classroom instruction, school activities, Individualized Education Program (IEP) services, parent engagement activities, and other school related functions. Performs related work.

Reports to: Principal and Designee

Direct Reports: N/A

Key Relationships: Students, parents/guardians, teachers, related service providers, school administrators, support staff, Committee on Special Education (CSE) personnel, and other school based and district personnel, as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provides interpretation (between spoken English and American Sign Language) or transliteration (between spoken English and Signed English) for deaf and hard of hearing students, parents and staff.
  • Interprets classroom instruction, small group instruction, counseling sessions, related services, assessments, school assemblies, field trips, extracurricular activities, and school sponsored events.
  • Supports student access to instruction and participation in all educational programs and activities consistent with IEP requirements and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Interprets during parent/teacher conferences, IEP meetings, CSE meetings, disciplinary conferences, and other school related meetings involving deaf and hard of hearing students, parents, or staff.
  • Collaborates with teachers, related service providers, and administrators to support effective communication and student access to the curriculum.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student and family information in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and NYCPS policies.
  • Participates in relevant professional learning and school based meetings, as assigned.
  • Maintains professional standards and adheres to the Code of Professional Conduct established by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).


Qualification Requirements:

Minimum

Fluency in American Sign Language and English and certification from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc., or completion of a Basic Interpreter Training Program at a recognized institution, and a 3.5 or higher score on the OSLIS interpreter screening assessment.

  • Ability to interpret and transliterate in a variety of settings.
  • Associate degree or equivalent.

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in a group setting.
  • Additional skills i.e. trilingual interpreting (Spanish), legal interpreting, and familiarity with public school system.
  • Ability to work effectively with Students with Disabilities, families and school staff in a diverse education environment.


Salary : $82,763 - $103,556

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
