Job Description:

  • Perform all required Watchstanding, maintenance and repair of ship's systems as assigned by the Chief Engineer, but specifically Electrical and Electronic systems in general and specifically High Voltage generation and propulsion aboard the current TS Empire State
  • Operate and maintain High Voltage Systems and associated control and automation systems
  • Operate, manage and perform assigned duties of a Maintenance Work Order System
  • Operate, manage and perform assigned duties of a Safety Management System
  • Teaching up to three courses in the Engine license curriculum each year (but no more than 9 credits) depending on the ship's operational schedule and at the discretion of the Chief Engineer
  • Participation on Summer Sea Term would be required for at least one half of the SST (Cruise A or Cruise B) with duties to include training and development of cadets onboard the ship during SST by a subject matter expert capable of mentoring 500 cadets
  • A direct advisor and mentor to engineering cadets in the engine license program
  • Advise the Indoctrination Program and works with Cadet IDO leadership to develop MUG engineering training programs during the academic semesters
  • Model appropriate character and strong ethics through disciplined behavior and professional appearance, as a representative of SUNY Maritime College. The position entails the daily shaping of the future leaders of global industries and the military, including those specializing in the Maritime profession, and the transportation and business sectors. As such this position requires the individual to maintain the highest standards of conduct and appearance, as well as actively leading and managing the development and maturation of the license cadets
  • Support the cooperation between the ship, the regiment, academia and professional development programs
  • When necessary, assist the TSES Engine Dept with the Dean of Admissions to recruit potential students including Open Houses and other events to showcase the College and in particular the engine training program on the ship

  • Active minimum grade USCG issued 2 A/E's MMC with STCW endorsement and at least 5 years sailing experience
  • Transportation Worker's Identification (TWIC) and passport for international travel
  • Experience in education, state, or large city system
  • Current STCW compliant MMC Medical Certificate
  • Valid driver license free of major or repeated violations
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills

Additional Information:

Classification/Salary Range: The Second Assistant Engineer is a UUP position. The anticipated salary range for the position is $95,000 to $105,000 annually, with an outstanding benefits package. Special Notes: This is a full-time calendar year (12 month) appointment UUP Position. Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
