Full Job Description
Acute General Medicine nurses are at the center of caring for some of the health system's most medically complex adult patients. This role offers the opportunity to build deep clinical expertise, strengthen critical thinking skills, and make a meaningful impact every day while working alongside highly collaborative interdisciplinary teams.

As a Registered Nurse in Acute General Medicine, you will join a supportive nursing environment that values professional growth, clinical excellence, and strong physician partnerships. Whether you are an experienced nurse seeking greater clinical complexity or a newer nurse looking to build a strong foundation, this service line offers exceptional opportunities to learn, develop, and advance your career.

The Role

Acute General Medicine encompasses seven inpatient units: 3 East, 3 Central, 3 West, 3 North, 4 North, 4 Central, and 6 Central. While each unit has unique characteristics and patient populations, all share a commitment to outstanding patient care, teamwork, and professional nursing practice.

In this role, you will care for adult patients experiencing a wide variety of medical conditions and disease processes in a fast-paced acute care environment. Depending on the unit, patient populations may include individuals requiring epilepsy monitoring, oncology-related care, ketamine treatment, specialty post-surgical care, and management of diverse high-acuity medical conditions.

A typical day may include:
  • Delivering comprehensive, evidence-based nursing care to adult medicine patients
  • Performing ongoing patient assessments and identifying changes in clinical condition
  • Collaborating closely with physicians, hospitalists, pharmacists, therapists, case managers, and other interdisciplinary team members
  • Managing patients with complex diagnoses and multiple comorbidities
  • Coordinating care plans and supporting safe patient transitions
  • Educating patients and families on treatment plans and recovery goals
  • Participating in shared governance, practice councils, quality initiatives, and nursing committees
  • Utilizing advanced clinical technologies including Epic EMR, Pyxis medication systems, and Alaris infusion pumps
  • Serving as a preceptor, mentor, charge nurse, or pursuing future leadership opportunities

One of the unique advantages of General Medicine at UVA Health is the opportunity to care for higher-acuity medical patients while developing advanced assessment, prioritization, and clinical decision-making skills in a nationally recognized academic medical environment.
