Typical Day in the Role

• The engineer's initial focus is reviewing BAS submittals, engineering deliverables, checking sequences of operations, points lists, controls schematics, riser and network architecture diagrams, panel and device schedules, then issuing comments and tracking them to closure through package revisions.
• Prioritizing quality and specification compliance oversight will be required.
• Daily coordination with mechanical, electrical, and facility engineering counterparts covers design reviews, RFIs, and field issues.

Purpose of the Team:

• The Building Automation Engineering team supports our global data center infrastructure by designing, reviewing, and maintaining building automation and control systems that manage cooling, airflow, humidity, and other critical environmental functions.
• The team partners with vendors and engineering stakeholders to ensure consistent controls standards are implemented across data center projects worldwide, supports construction and commissioning activities, reviews technical deliverables, and resolves issues in mission-critical environments to maintain reliable Azure data center operations.

Key projects:

• Support global our data center projects by reviewing Building Automation System (BAS) designs, engineering deliverables, controls schematics, sequences of operations, points lists, and network architecture documentation.
• Drive standardization of building automation and controls designs across our worldwide data center portfolio, ensuring consistency and alignment with established engineering standards.
• Support construction and commissioning activities by reviewing design drawings, creating and executing testing scripts, validating system performance, and resolving technical issues identified during project delivery.
• Partner with vendors, integrators, and cross-functional engineering teams to review deliverables, identify risks, and ensure successful implementation of mission-critical facility controls systems.
• Support hyperscale data center build-outs by providing technical oversight, reviewing BAS submittals, tracking design comments through closure, and helping resolve field and commissioning issues.
• Maintain visibility and documentation for design changes, lessons learned, and engineering standards to improve future data center deployments globally.

Candidate Requirements

Disqualifiers:

• No Building Automation Systems (BAS) engineering experience. Candidates must have hands-on experience supporting, designing, programming, or commissioning BAS environments.
• No mission-critical or data center experience. Candidates lacking experience in data centers, critical facilities, or other mission-critical environments will not be competitive for the role.
• Insufficient industry experience. Candidates should possess substantial BAS engineering experience, with the intake discussion referencing approximately 8+ years of relevant experience.
• No experience reviewing controls engineering deliverables. Candidates should be familiar with controls design documents, sequences of operations, controls schematics, points lists, and related technical documentation.
• No commissioning or field implementation experience. Candidates should have experience supporting commissioning activities, testing, issue resolution, and validation of building automation systems.
• Limited knowledge of major DDC platforms and building automation protocols. Candidates should demonstrate experience with common BAS/DDC vendors and controls technologies used in mission-critical environments.
• Unable to support collaboration across U.S. and APAC teams. Candidates should be willing and able to accommodate occasional meetings with the Singapore-based team and work across time zones when needed.

What is the ideal background of a candidate for this role?:

• Strong working knowledge of building automation protocols such as BACnet and Modbus, and of DDC and PLC controls platforms.
• Working knowledge of HVAC and mechanical and electrical systems as they relate to controls integration.
• Proficiency with design and documentation tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, and Visio.
• Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to represent design intent to integrators, vendors, and internal stakeholders.

Best vs. Average:

• Experience supporting mission-critical environments such as data centers, critical facilities, hospitals, or other high-availability infrastructure.
• Hands-on experience designing, programming, commissioning, or supporting Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Direct Digital Controls (DDC) platforms.
• Experience reviewing controls design packages, sequences of operations, controls schematics, points lists, network architecture diagrams, and BAS submittals.
• Exposure to hyperscale data center design, construction, commissioning, or operations.
• Experience authoring, maintaining, or enforcing engineering standards across a portfolio of projects.
• Proficiency with design and documentation tools including AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, and Visio.
• Strong understanding of building automation protocols such as BACnet and Modbus, as well as DDC and PLC control systems.
• Experience collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams, vendors, and system integrators in a global project environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to document findings, track design comments to closure, and clearly communicate design intent to stakeholders.

Preferred background:

• Controls design experience in mission critical, data center, or critical facility environments.
• Experience authoring or maintaining controls design standards across a portfolio of projects.
• Prior experience delivering in a vendor or consulting model.

Salary Range: $1,66,000 - 1,76,000 Annually -Factors that may affect pay within this range may include geography/market, skills, education, experience, and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
