Full Job Description
Develops, writes and edits medical and scientific news and information to create clear, relevant, and engaging content that educates the public, empowers patients and caregivers, and supports healthcare professionals. This advanced-level role leads the development of complex and high-priority content initiatives, identifies emerging trends and news opportunities, and translates complex medical information into clear, actionable content. The position exercises a high degree of independent judgment, advises leadership on content opportunities and priorities, and serves as a trusted resource on medical journalism and health content creation.

Working closely with other writers, editors and subject matter experts, this role helps ensure ACS's cancer information is accessible and optimized for how users search, navigate, and consume content.

This position plays a key role in the creation of accurate, relevant, and timely medical content, which is critical to protecting organizational reputation, ensuring compliance, and reducing risk.

This is a fully remote position and is open to candidates located anywhere within the United States.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Lead strategic identification of emerging time sensitive oncology topics and evaluate for relevancy for integration in news and cancer.org content. (35%)
  • Write, edit, and refine cancer news and information to engage public audiences with clarity, accuracy, and relevance. (35%)
  • Develop innovative content and storytelling approaches that strengthen ACS visibility and engages audiences. (10%)
  • Conduct interviews with clinicians, researchers, and other subject matter experts. (10%)
  • Collaborate with medical editors, SEO team, and editorial staff to shape editorial strategy, maintain consistent style, address content gaps, and align with user search behavior. (10%)


EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum Degree Required: Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, or other related field
  • Preferred Degree: Master's Degree or Doctorate Degree
  • Certificate(s) or License(s): Medical Writer Certified (administered by Medical Writing Certification Commission and American Medical Writers Association) or equivalent
  • Years of experience: Minimum of 7 to 10 years of medical journalism, health communications, medical writing, or related field


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:

Content Expertise:
  • Demonstrated expertise in reporting, writing, and editing medical and scientific content
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify emerging trends, evaluate scientific developments, and recommend high-impact content opportunities
  • Advanced ability to evaluate scientific literature, research findings, and clinical evidence, and interpret for public audiences
  • Exceptional storytelling skills and ability to develop compelling content across multiple formats
  • Ability to make editorial decisions to balance medical accuracy, user needs, and digital best practices
  • Knowledge of health literacy best practices


Technology:
  • Proficiency with Windows operating system and Office suite software
  • Proficiency with WCMS (Web Content Management Systems) to author content, preferably AEM (Adobe Experience Manager)
  • Familiarity with general website best practices for SEO, user experience, and accessibility
  • Understanding of basic HTML and general web development concepts
  • Familiarity with project management and collaboration software, preferably Monday

The starting rate is $95,000 to $105,000. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
