Overview:

We are seeking a Senior Windows Systems Engineer who will play a crucial role in managing and supporting Windows servers and large storage systems! Areas of focus include maintaining system health, analyzing system performance, and ensuring all activities are documented in accordance with National Security Sciences and customer requirements. This position resides in the Support Services & Isolated Environments group in the Research Computing division of the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

This team supports the ORNL's goals through robust systems engineering, integration, and support tailored specifically for our NSS research community. We manage a variety of critical infrastructures including mid-range clusters, servers, workstations, and other pivotal services.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Systems Administration:
  • Manage, configure, and maintain Windows server environments, including Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Monitor and optimize system performance, ensuring uptime and reliability.
  • Perform regular system updates, patches, and backups.
  • STIG checking and systems compliance.


Virtualization & Storage:
  • Implement and support VMware virtualized environments tailored for Windows systems.
  • Manage storage solutions relevant to Windows environments, ensuring data integrity and availability.


Security & Compliance:
  • Implement and maintain security best practices for Windows systems.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies and standards.


Customer Service & Support:
  • Provide advanced support and troubleshooting for Windows-based systems.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to resolve technical issues and provide recommendations for system improvements.
  • Deliver high-quality customer service, both internally and externally.


Project Management & Documentation:
  • Lead or participate in projects related to Windows infrastructure, from design to implementation.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for all system configurations, processes, and procedures.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects efficiently.
  • Update and maintain all documentation as required

Basic Qualifications:
  • A BS in information technology, information systems, computer science, computer engineering, business, science, or a related field of study and a minimum of 8 to 12 years of Windows systems engineering and administration experience is required for consideration. An overall combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Active DOE Q, active DOD Top Secret, or active DOD TS/SCI clearance is required for consideration.
  • Proven expertise in managing Windows server environments, including Active Directory, DNS, and other core services.
  • Strong knowledge of virtualization technology.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working at a DOE facility
  • Familiarity with NSS federal computer systems and compliance standards is a plus.
  • Experience with scripting and automation (e.g., PowerShell).
  • Experience with STIG hardening.
  • Knowledge of network infrastructure as it relates to Windows environments.
  • Experience in SANs: preferred experience with EqualLogic, EMC, Synology, NetApp is desired.
  • Experience with building and managing a Citrix and VMware virtualization platforms.
  • Experience with Thin Clients is desired.
  • Experience with Wyse Management Suite is desired.
  • Familiarity with COMSEC.
  • Experience with BigFix.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.


Special Requirements:
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
