Job Description
Reporting to the St. Joseph's Health President and Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Physician Executive (CPE) will serve as the enterprise physician leader and thought partner to the CEO. This leader will be responsible for driving strategy with physician alignment, integrated care delivery, care transformation, and fostering clinical excellence across the organization. This highly visible leader is an important contributor to the future strategic vision by assessing, prioritizing, and delivering unified, connected care across all entities within the delivery network. The CPE will guide and support the work of the Acute Care Hospitals, Medical Group, Population Health, Clinical Integrated Network, Ambulatory Care, and Care Delivery Transformation. The CPE will develop, mentor, and retain the highest level of physician leadership to create, integrate, and grow cohesion between the executive team, physicians (aligned and employed), nursing team, Department Chairs, Service Line Leaders, and St. Joseph's Health.
The CPE will advance the delivery of evidence-based, high-value, clinically excellent care. They will partner with physician leaders to reduce unwarranted variations across all sites of care, effectively connecting the quality, safety, and operations of the delivery system. As the leading physician in the organization, the CPE will align providers, develop consensus among clinical leaders and operations, and build collaborative teams to improve the health of the patient population served by St. Joseph.
The CPE will have experience in a complex, integrated delivery system on a large scale. They will be positioned to demonstrably advance clinical care delivery, the patient experience, and provider satisfaction toward St. Joseph's objective of clinical excellence across the full continuum of care. The CPE will take a highly collaborative and dynamic approach to achieving organizational goals, ensuring positive working relationships and desired outcomes. The CPE will possess exceptional relationship skills and an innovative systems approach to problem-solving, consensus-building, and advancing contemporary process improvement initiatives. They will take a team-based and dynamic approach to achieving organizational goals by forming cohesive partnerships with hospital operations and community entities. This individual will be able to understand the organization's business needs, prioritize objectives, and support the development of physician leaders to lead St. Joseph's into the future of health care.
Qualifications
Work requires the knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts normally acquired through completion of M.D./D.O. (or equivalent) is required. Completed postgraduate medical education in an ACGME-accredited residency program, with current Board Certification is required. Eligible for licensure in the state of New Jersey. An advanced degree in health care management or an M.B.A. complemented with leadership experience is desired.
A minimum of seven years of senior leadership experience in a similarly complex organization. Demonstrated track record of leadership in driving change and working across a matrixed organization. An executive presence, politically savvy, and a diplomatic leader who is astute and respectful. Experience developing quality, safety, and performance improvement programs, with a demonstrated track record of achieving exceptional results, including comprehensive knowledge and understanding of evidence-based medicine and multiple quality improvement tools and principles. Demonstrated personal and interpersonal qualities reflecting confidence, trust, credibility, and accountability. Experience leading within an integrated delivery system across acute, post-acute, medical group, and ambulatory spectrums of care. Successful track record of providing effective administrative and physician leadership while developing physician engagement and driving clinical quality outcomes. Knowledge of EHR systems and their integration into quality data gathering improvement processes, clinical operations, and support of strategic initiatives. Track record of relationship-building and effective communication across an organization, including physicians, senior management, clinical leaders, staff, and patients. Demonstrated experience and results in developing physician leaders and holding them accountable to achieve results in their respective areas. Working knowledge of ACOs, population health, risk-based contacts, and the complexities surrounding clinical care redesign. Experience with and commitment to graduate medical education, including evolving regulatory and accrediting issues. Experience building and leading connected clinical operations through integrated service lines and multidisciplinary care.

About the Team
St. Joseph's University Medical Center is an academic tertiary care medical center and state designated trauma center, located on the Paterson campus, regularly accepts referrals of difficult or unusual cases from other hospitals and physicians and performs both complex and routine procedures.
The Medical Center offers a full complement of specialty and subspecialty services including ambulatory, behavioral health, cardiovascular, emergency/trauma, internal medicine, neuroscience, oncology, orthopedic/spine, rehabilitation, surgical specialty, women's health, imaging and pediatrics.
