The Opportunity
South Bow is seeking a highly motivated U.S. Energy Trader to join our Marketing & Trading team. In this role, you will be responsible for managing and optimizing energy commodity portfolios across North American markets. You will identify, evaluate, structure, and execute profitable trading opportunities while balancing risk and maximizing portfolio value. The successful candidate brings strong commercial acumen, market expertise, and sound decision-making skills, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced and competitive trading environment.
What You'll Do
- Develop and execute trading strategies that optimize portfolio value while operating within established risk limits, compliance requirements, and business objectives.
- Monitor market fundamentals, pricing, logistics, infrastructure constraints, and regulatory developments to identify and capture profitable trading opportunities.
- Optimize the value of transportation, storage, and related infrastructure assets through strategic trading, scheduling, and asset utilization.
- Build and maintain relationships with customers, suppliers, counterparties, brokers, and internal stakeholders to enhance market intelligence and commercial opportunities.
- Negotiate, structure, and execute physical and financial commodity transactions in accordance with approved risk and commercial mandates.
- Manage daily positions, exposures, and risk, ensuring accurate trade execution and portfolio oversight.
- Accountable for the financial performance of assigned trading portfolios, including identifying opportunities to improve profitability and optimize risk-adjusted returns.
- Partner closely with scheduling, operations, accounting, and risk teams to ensure accurate trade capture, settlement, and compliance with contractual obligations.
- Identify, evaluate, and execute discretionary trading and market development opportunities that complement and expand existing portfolio strategies.
- Utilize ETRM systems, market data platforms, and analytical tools to support trading decisions and portfolio optimization.
- Collaborate with analytics and risk teams to evaluate market opportunities, price exposures, and hedging strategies.
- Drive continuous improvement through process enhancements, automation initiatives, and advanced analytics.
- Lead or support the resolution of commercial issues impacting portfolio performance, including contractual disputes, claims, and settlement matters.
- Operate in accordance with risk management policies, regulatory requirements, and South Bow's Code of Business Ethics.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Engineering, Commerce, or a related discipline.
- 6+ years of experience in commodity trading, energy marketing, commercial operations, risk management, or a related field.
- Demonstrated understanding of physical and financial energy markets, trading concepts, and risk management principles.
- Strong commercial acumen with experience evaluating market opportunities, negotiating transactions, and generating value.
- Experience using trading and analytical tools, including advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience working with ETRM systems and commodity market data platforms.
- Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management capabilities.
- Proven ability to perform under pressure and make timely decisions in a dynamic market environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience trading crude oil, refined products, condensate, NGLs, natural gas, power, or related energy commodities.
- Demonstrated track record of generating commercial value through trading, optimization, and asset utilization.
- Experience managing transportation, storage, blending, or other midstream infrastructure portfolios.
- Advanced analytical skills using Python, SQL, VBA, Power BI, or similar tools.
- Established industry network across North American energy markets.
- MBA, CFA, ERP, or other relevant professional designation is considered an asset.
Required Conditions
- Valid authorization for travel between Canada and the United States.
- Willingness to travel approximately 5% of working time for customer meetings, industry events, training, and business-related activities.
