Responsibilities

  • Provide senior consultancy on design, optimization, and construction administration of ventilation, fire, and life safety systems for tunnels and other facilities.
  • Develop design criteria manuals, technical reports, detailed calculations, drawings, and specifications using SES and CFD tools.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams to create ventilation concepts, optimize capacities, and integrate control and monitoring systems.
  • Support commissioning and construction administration while reviewing designs to ensure accurate modeling of tunnel networks.
  • Drive business growth by developing pursuit strategies, mentoring junior staff, publishing technical articles, and strengthening client relationships.
  • Coordinate technical aspects of mid-to-large size projects and contribute to recruiting and expanding the tunneling practice.

AECOM is seeking a Senior Tunnel Ventilation and Fire Protection Engineer to support our US Transportation Practice in our NYC office. This position offers a flexible/hybrid schedule or the opportunity to work remotely.

Role/Responsibilities of this position include but not limited to:
  • Senior consultancy in design, design optimization and construction administration of Ventilation Fire & Life Safety systems for transit/highway tunnels, overbuilds, industrial, utility, commercial and process facilities across North America and globally
  • Develop design criteria manuals, technical reports, calculations, drawings and specifications, heating and cooling load calculations, pressure loss calculations for such facilities
  • Develop ventilation concepts and strategies for determination of tenability and fire life safety requirements using 1-D Subway Environment Simulation (SES) and 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Optimize ventilation capacities using SES and CFD, space proof, layout and design tunnel ventilation equipment including equipment access and removal plans
  • Develop mode of operation table and systems integration with control and monitoring systems
  • Work in multidisciplinary teams, review SMEP design drawings to correctly develop models that accurately reflect the tunnels network, station(s) and facilities
  • Provide support during commissioning and construction administration activities
  • Grow the tunnel vent and underground practice in the firm by the development of pursuit strategies, technical concepts, and proposal technical approaches
  • Help identify, attract, and assist in recruiting additional tunneling staff
  • Mentor junior tunnel ventilation engineers to strengthen the tunnel ventilation center of excellence
  • Publish technical articles in ISAVFT, ASHRAE and other international conferences
  • Coordinates and provides technical expertise for mid- large-size projects
  • Leads technical client relationships and plays a major role in selling
  • Leads discipline department efforts to grow technical expertise
  • Leads technical business development work
  • Provides specialized technical input to studies and design for staff's specific area of expertise


Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering + (8) years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/ or education
  • Professional registration (PE) in at least one state and willingness to register in other states if needed
  • Experience with Regulatory requirements for tunnel ventilation and fire safety, including experience in railways and underground spaces, including NFPA 130 and NFPA 502
  • Experience with systems engineering, integration, equipment testing and implementation


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Fifteen (15) years of tunnel Ventilation and underground structures related experience
  • MS in Mechanical engineering
  • Thoroughly knowledgeable of various tunnel ventilation methods and technique
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of CFD modeling and the ability to mentor and oversee work by Junior engineers
  • Membership with relevant professional organizations and active participation in National societies and organizations
  • Publications in technical journals and conferences and seminars
  • Ability and willingness to work remotely with some occasional travel to NYC
  • Technical report preparation, and supervision of less experienced engineers, designers and technicians
  • Experienced in mechanical and electrical performance quantification of tunnel ventilation equipment .
  • Experienced in load and energy modeling, LEED, Revit and facilities MEP design requirements
  • In depth understanding and a proven track record in the application of fluid flow, heat and mass transfer governing equations
  • Technical papers published in international conferences
  • Collaborate with National Tunnel and Underground Engineering Practice Risk and Quality Leaders to recommend Risk Management Plan and Quality Plan on projects
