JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Technical Project Manager is accountable for the successful delivery of complex custom software development projects. This role owns project planning, execution, financial performance, and client experience - ensuring delivery is on time, within scope, and aligned with defined quality and margin expectations.
The Senior Technical Project Manager serves as the primary client-facing leader for assigned engagements and drives alignment across internal teams to ensure predictable outcomes, strong financial performance, and long-term client satisfaction. This role operates with a high degree of autonomy and exercises sound judgment in managing risk, navigating change, and leading cross-functional collaboration. The role also plays a key part in requirements analysis - working closely with clients and internal teams to clarify business needs and define clear acceptance criteria before and during execution.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Project Planning + Execution
- Lead complex custom software development projects from initiation through delivery.
- Develop and manage comprehensive project plans, milestones, dependencies, and financial targets.
- Partner with clients and stakeholders to elicit and clarify business and functional requirements that inform project scope and technical design.
- Ensure alignment between client objectives, architectural design, and execution.
- Drive disciplined execution and adjust plans proactively as conditions evolve.
- Scope, Budget + Risk Management
- Own full accountability for scope, budget, and margin performance.
- Enforce structured change management to prevent scope creep.
- Monitor burn rates and forecasts, and address variances early.
- Identify and mitigate delivery, technical, and financial risks.
- Escalate material issues with recommended solutions.
- Client Engagement + Communication
- Serve as the primary client contact, including executive stakeholders.
- Lead status meetings and provide clear reporting on progress, financials, and risks.
- Facilitate requirements-gathering discussions with client stakeholders to clarify business objectives and success criteria.
- Manage expectations with transparency and professionalism.
- Resolve conflicts and escalations in a solution-oriented manner.
- Support long-term client retention through consistent delivery excellence.
- Cross-Team Coordination + Resource Management
- Align architects, developers, designers, and QA around priorities and timelines.
- Coordinate resource allocation in partnership with Management.
- Translate client business needs into clear requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria for architects and developers.
- Remove obstacles impacting team performance.
- Provide informal mentorship to other Project Managers as needed.
- Project Reporting + Documentation
- Maintain accurate documentation of scope, financials, risks, and key decisions.
- Provide consistent internal and client-facing project reporting.
- Ensure proper project closeout and transition to Client Success.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of project management standards and tools.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Strong understanding of custom software development lifecycles and technical delivery environments.
- Advanced knowledge of Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid methodologies.
- Strong financial acumen related to budgeting, forecasting, and margin management.
- Ability to elicit, analyze, and document business and functional requirements.
- Ability to manage multiple high-complexity projects concurrently.
- Exceptional risk identification and mitigation skills.
- Confident communicator capable of engaging both technical teams and executive stakeholders.
- High level of ownership, accountability, and independent decision-making.
- Strong leadership presence without direct authority over cross-functional teams.
- Familiarity with business analysis techniques (e.g., process mapping, user stories, use cases) is a plus.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field preferred.
- 8+ years of experience managing client-facing technology or software development projects.
- Demonstrated success in delivering complex, multi-phase projects with financial accountability.
- Experience in professional services, consulting, or custom software development environments.
- PMP certification preferred.
- Agile or Scrum certifications (e.g., CSM, PMI-ACP) are a plus.
