Senior Technical Manuals Manager to lead the development, validation, publication, and sustainment of technical manuals and documentation sets supporting complex defense systems, ground equipment, and communications platforms.
This leadership role is responsible for managing teams of technical writers, illustrators, and editors; ensuring compliance with military specifications; coordinating with engineering and sustainment teams; and delivering high-quality technical documentation that supports operator usability, maintenance readiness, and lifecycle sustainment.
The ideal candidate has deep experience producing military-standard technical manuals and leading documentation efforts in a defense or government contracting environment.
Key Responsibilities- Lead end-to-end development of technical manuals, including operator, maintenance, training, and depot-level documentation.
- Oversee creation of Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) and S1000D/BREP-based digital publications.
- Manage a team of technical writers, illustrators, editors, and publication specialists.
- Interpret engineering drawings, BOMs, change requests, and test data to produce accurate documentation.
- Ensure manuals meet applicable military and government specifications (MIL-STD-38784, MIL-STD-40051, S1000D, etc.).
- Develop documentation strategies, schedules, and resource plans to support program requirements.
- Drive configuration control, document lifecycle management, and version tracking.
- Coordinate validation/verification (V&V) events with customer representatives and field units.
- Support RFP responses, Basis of Estimate (BOE) development, and documentation-related cost proposals.
- Collaborate with engineering, logistics, training, and program management teams to ensure technical accuracy.
- Manage relationships with DoD customers, primes, and subcontractors.
- Oversee publication formatting, style compliance, and quality assurance processes.
- Ensure deliverables meet contract requirements, delivery schedules, and government acceptance criteria.
RequirementsMinimum Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Technical Communications, Engineering, Logistics, or related field. Equivalent professional experience considered.
- 8+ years of experience in technical manual development within a defense, aerospace, or government contracting environment.
- Demonstrated experience with military technical manual production and relevant standards.
- Strong understanding of IETM frameworks, S1000D, and XML-based publication systems.
- Experience managing a team of technical writers or publication specialists.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and system specifications.
- Excellent written communication, editing, and document quality skills.
- Experience interfacing with DoD customers, primes, or government engineering offices.
- Ability to manage multiple documentation projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
- Active DoD Secret (or higher) clearance.
- U.S. Citizenship required
Preferred Qualifications- Master's degree in Technical Communications, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with defense systems such as communications equipment, radar, C4ISR systems, or ground support hardware.
- Knowledge of GEIA-STD-0007, MIL-DTL-24784, and DoD sustainment documentation requirements.
- Familiarity with provisioning, logistics product data, or ILS elements.
- Experience with content management systems for S1000D publications.
- Active DoD Top Secret clearance.
- Experience supporting validation/verification events with military end users.

- This position's standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.
