Full Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Transmission Line Designer to support the delivery of high-voltage transmission projects across America. In this role, you will devolve the overhead transmission line designs, drawings from planning through construction, including routing studies, structure spotting, plan-and-profile drawings, transmission line structural drawings, pole vendor drawings, crossing drawings, permitting drawings, layout drawings, constructability reviews, and multidisciplinary coordination with substation, civil, structural, geotechnical, and environmental teams. Projects may include utility transmission expansions, renewable energy interconnections, grid modernization programs, and large-scale data center developments.

The Opportunity
  • Lead the design, development, and delivery of overhead transmission line projects ranging from 69 kV to 765 kV, including new lines, upgrades, rebuilds, relocations, and system reinforcements.
  • Prepare and review transmission line engineering deliverables including route evaluations, plan and profile drawings, structure spotting, staking sheets, construction packages, and as-built documentation.
  • Perform and oversee transmission line design activities including conductor selection, line rating studies, structure loading, sag and tension calculations, clearance analysis, and material selection.
  • Coordinate closely with civil, structural, geotechnical, environmental, permitting, survey, and project management teams to ensure successful project execution.
  • Develop design criteria, engineering standards, and project-specific technical requirements in accordance with utility standards, NESC, applicable codes, and industry best practices.
  • Review transmission line layouts, structure configurations, foundation concepts, conductor and shield wire arrangements, and right-of-way constraints to develop optimized engineering solutions.
  • Support route selection studies and evaluate technical, environmental, permitting, construction, operational, and maintenance considerations.
  • Coordinate technical interfaces with utilities, clients, contractors, surveyors, equipment manufacturers, regulatory agencies, and other project stakeholders.
  • Lead internal and external design coordination meetings, document key decisions, and track action items through completion.
  • Ensure consistency and quality of transmission line design deliverables across all project phases.
  • Coordinate the preparation, review, and issuance of drawings, design reports, construction specifications, material lists, and procurement documentation.
  • Identify and proactively resolve design conflicts, constructability concerns, right-of-way constraints, permitting challenges, and schedule risks.
  • Monitor engineering progress, resource utilization, project budgets, and schedule milestones throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support field investigations, site visits, constructability reviews, construction activities, and commissioning efforts as required.
  • Provide technical support during construction, including responses to RFIs, design modifications, field change evaluations, and issue resolution.
  • Ensure compliance with client requirements, utility standards, NESC, local regulations, and applicable engineering practices.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior designers, engineers, and drafting staff.

Is this role right for you?
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, Electrical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline, with 5+ years of experience in overhead transmission line design, detailing and delivery for utility, renewable energy, industrial, or data center infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering high-voltage transmission line projects (69 kV to 500 kV+) drawing package, including routing, structure spotting, plan-and-profile development, foundation coordination, pole vendor drawings, pole loading drawings, permitting drawings, various layout drawings, foundation drawings, construction package preparation, and multidisciplinary coordination with substation, civil, structural, and geotechnical teams.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable industry standards and utility practices, including NESC (IEEE C2), ASCE 7, ASCE 10, IEEE transmission line standards, utility transmission design criteria, and construction and safety requirements.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard software including PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE/TOWER, AutoCAD, MicroStation, ArcGIS, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office. Professional certifications such as EIT, PE, PMP, or equivalent industry credentials are desirable. (Suggested qualification based on industry practice.)
  • Ability and willingness to review, sign, and seal transmission line engineering documents where permitted by licensure and project requirements.
  • Experience delivering transmission line projects through planning, routing, detailed engineering, procurement support, construction, and commissioning phases.
  • Familiarity with transmission line upgrades, rebuilds, reconductoring projects, line relocations, and brownfield utility environments.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams including civil, structural, geotechnical, environmental, survey, permitting, and construction disciplines.
  • Strong understanding of transmission line materials, structures, foundations, insulator systems, hardware assemblies, grounding, and shielding systems.
  • Experience supporting construction activities, field investigations, site inspections, constructability reviews, and resolution of field engineering issues.
  • Working knowledge of utility interconnection requirements, permitting constraints, right-of-way considerations, and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Ability to review and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, survey data, geotechnical reports, and construction documentation.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills with the ability to effectively engage clients, utilities, contractors, vendors, and internal project teams.

New York Hiring Range - Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in New York is $125,000 - $150,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of New York will differ.
