Overview

Auburn University's Office of Information Technology (OIT) is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer - Linux & Web Infrastructure to serve as a lead technical expert responsible for the design, implementation, security, and ongoing operation of enterprise Linux platforms and web infrastructure services.

This position blends deep Linux systems engineering expertise with web infrastructure and platform engineering, supporting highly available, secure, and scalable services across on-premises and cloud environments. The engineer will play a critical role in Auburn's modernization initiatives, ensuring the University can host, secure, and deliver services from anywhere to anywhere while maintaining enterprise reliability and compliance.

The successful candidate will operate with a high degree of independence, provide architectural leadership, and collaborate closely with infrastructure, security, application, and campus IT partners.

Working onsite is a requirement of the job. May be approved to work up to 3 days hybrid remote in local area with supervisor's approval upon completion of probationary period.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain enterprise Linux systems supporting web, application, and infrastructure services
  • Engineer and support web infrastructure platforms, including Apache and NGINX, and integrations with enterprise load balancing (e.g., F5 or equivalent)
  • Architect and manage highly available and scalable web and application hosting platforms
  • Ensure Linux and web platforms meet security, compliance, and performance standards, including patching, hardening, vulnerability remediation, and certificate management
  • Support and evolve hybrid infrastructure environments, spanning on-premises systems and public cloud platforms
  • Provide technical leadership for modernization efforts, including cloud readiness, containerization, and automation
  • Manage core infrastructure services such as DNS, IP addressing, firewall coordination, SSL/TLS certificates, and system monitoring
  • Develop and maintain automation and configuration management to improve reliability, consistency, and operational efficiency
  • Participate in backup, disaster recovery, and cyber-resilience operations, ensuring recoverability of Linux and web-hosted systems
  • Create and maintain clear technical documentation, standards, and operational runbooks
  • Serve as a technical consultant to campus IT and application teams; mentor junior engineers
  • Participate in after-hours maintenance and on-call rotation as required
  • Handle systems containing sensitive or regulated data in accordance with University policies
