Short Description

Bowman has an opportunity for a Senior Survey Party Chief to join our team in San Diego, CA.

Purpose

Perform a variety of advanced and complex field surveying and geospatial data collection activities in support of boundary, topographic, construction, utility, and other surveying projects. Lead field crews in the collection of accurate survey data, ensure compliance with project requirements and quality standards, and support the successful execution of surveying assignments.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Direction
  • Perform work under limited supervision, exercising independent judgment in field operations and data collection activities.
  • Lead and direct survey field crews, providing guidance, training, and technical support to survey team members.
  • Review work performed by junior staff and crew members for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established quality standards.
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement in all field operations.
  • Coordinate daily crew activities, equipment utilization, and project priorities to meet schedule and budget objectives.
  • Serve as a field resource for resolving complex surveying challenges and technical issues.


At the Operational and Company Level
  • Promote the firm's surveying, geospatial, and related service capabilities to support client retention, strengthen existing relationships, and contribute to the pursuit of new business opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with clients, contractors, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders.
  • Support project managers in achieving project objectives related to quality, schedule, budget, and client satisfaction.
  • Ensure compliance with company standards, survey procedures, quality control requirements, and safety initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve field operations, survey methodologies, and resource utilization to enhance project efficiency and performance.


Do the Work
  • Lead and provide day-to-day supervision of assigned survey field crews, ensuring work is completed safely, accurately, and in accordance with project requirements and established survey standards.
  • Serve as the senior field resource on complex boundary, topographic, construction, utility, and geospatial surveying assignments.
  • Train, mentor, and develop junior survey personnel, providing technical guidance on survey procedures, equipment operation, and field best practices.
  • Coordinate survey services and field activities with contractors, clients, utility representatives, project managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Evaluate survey control, boundary evidence, and property line information, exercising professional judgment to determine appropriate survey procedures and field decisions.
  • Review project requirements and gather all necessary information to efficiently plan field operations, assign crew responsibilities, and maximize productivity.
  • Communicate directly with clients regarding project progress, field conditions, schedule impacts, and survey-related issues, as appropriate.
  • Perform and verify field calculations, maintain accurate survey notes and records, and ensure the completeness and quality of collected data.
  • Oversee the operation, maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of survey instruments, GPS equipment, scanners, and other geospatial data collection technologies.
  • Ensure assigned survey vehicles are properly maintained and operated in accordance with company policies and safety requirements.
  • Maintain accountability for assigned survey equipment, including inventory management, maintenance, storage, and replacement recommendations.
  • Monitor crew productivity and communicate regularly with project managers and department leadership regarding staffing needs, project status, scheduling, and resource requirements.
  • Assist with quality reviews of field data and support the successful transition of survey information for office processing and deliverable preparation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required, associate's degree or bachelor's degree preferred. Commensurate relevant experience considered.
  • Seven (7+) or more years of progressive experience in land surveying, including experience leading survey field crews on a variety of boundary, topographic, construction, utility, and ALTA/NSPS survey projects.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as a Party Chief with responsibility for planning, coordinating, and executing complex field surveying assignments.
  • Advanced knowledge of construction staking principles, procedures, and quality control practices.
  • Strong knowledge of boundary surveying principles, evidence evaluation, deed research application, and ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently perform and oversee field data collection for topographic surveys, route and roadway surveys, cross-section surveys, utility surveys, as-built surveys, and construction layout projects.
  • Advanced proficiency with total stations, GNSS/GPS equipment, data collectors, digital levels, and other surveying and geospatial technologies, with the ability to learn and implement emerging technologies.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and survey data processing workflows preferred.
  • Strong understanding of survey calculations, coordinate geometry, field-to-finish procedures, and quality assurance/quality control standards.
  • Proven ability to lead, train, mentor, and develop junior survey personnel while maintaining a safe and productive work environment.
  • Strong communication, organizational, problem-solving, and client interaction skills.
  • Current, valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record as determined by the Company.


Salary and eligible variable compensation (if any) commensurate with experience. Range is $40/hour - $51/hour and includes a comprehensive benefits package.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Partly indoor professional office environment which may include bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.
  • Mobility around an office environment.

  • Partly outdoor work environment which may include adverse weather conditions, varying temperatures, excessive noise, and/or potential hazards.
  • Mobility around a job/construction site to include walking, bending, crawling, climbing, squatting, or kneeling and wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Frequent and prolonged use of data collection equipment and/or drones, necessitating walking the assigned study area to complete data collection over the course of several hours.
  • Primarily local travel during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required according to the needs of the business.
  • Occasional lifting or carrying up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional pushing or pulling up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.
