Job Description We are seeking a Senior Geotechnical Staff Engineer to join our team in Indianapolis, IN. In this role, you will support and lead geotechnical investigations and engineering services for transportation, municipal, commercial, industrial, aviation, energy, and other infrastructure projects. This position combines field investigations, engineering analysis, project management, technical report preparation, and client interaction while ensuring compliance with applicable industry standards and regulatory requirements.
The ideal candidate will effectively manage projects, resources, and staff while providing technical guidance and engineering expertise on a diverse range of public and private sector projects. Core Responsibilities - Plan, coordinate, and oversee subsurface investigations, including drilling, sampling, in-situ testing, and field exploration activities
- Perform site visits, preliminary site reconnaissance, and evaluations of existing site conditions to support project planning and field investigation programs
- Review and interpret laboratory and field test data to inform engineering decisions
- Prepare and review geotechnical engineering reports, including geotechnical investigation reports, foundation recommendations, earthwork specifications, slope assessments, and feasibility studies.
- Perform geotechnical analyses for shallow and deep foundations, settlement evaluations, earthwork design, retaining structures, lateral earth pressures, slope stability, global stability, seepage analyses, and ground improvement applications.
- Develop geotechnical recommendations for a variety of infrastructure projects, including residential and commercial developments, bridges, highways, railways, airports, pipelines, levees, flood control structures, and industrial facilities.
- Provide technical support during design and construction phases, including troubleshooting geotechnical issues and recommending practical, cost-effective solutions.
- Prepare project scopes, schedules, budgets, and cost estimates, and monitor project performance throughout execution.
- Coordinate and manage multiple projects simultaneously while ensuring quality, schedule, and budget objectives are achieved.
- Collaborate with clients, contractors, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary project teams to successfully deliver projects.
- Support business development efforts through proposal preparation, client relationship management, and participation in project pursuits.
- Maintain a strong commitment to safety, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.
- Actively participate in professional organizations, technical committees, industry conferences, and continuing education activities to promote professional development and industry engagement.
Requirements: - Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology from an accredited institution; Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering or a related field is a plus
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required; Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred or ability to obtain licensure through exam or comity within 12 to 24 months.
- 4+ year of civil engineering experience (Construction Management or Geotechnical Engineering experience preferred)
- Strong understanding of Geotechnical engineering principles, subsurface investigation methods, laboratory testing, and construction practices
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Commitment to safety, quality, and teamwork, with a valid driver's license for fieldwork
- Experience supporting transportation, municipal, aviation, industrial, commercial, energy, and other infrastructure-related projects.
- Familiarity with Geotechnical analysis and design software such as GeoStudio, Slide, LPILE, GROUP, SHAFT, Settle3, gINT/OpenGround, or similar programs.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, client service, and teamwork.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel for field investigations, client meetings, and project-related activities.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for team-based working.
• Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record. - Geotechnical background including fundamental knowledge of principles of Geotechnical engineering, soil and rock mechanics, pavement engineering, and groundwater hydrology.
- Experience in construction oversight for foundation and pavement construction and earthwork observation.
- Experience with Geotechnical engineering software.
- Familiarity with AASHTO standards, local building codes, guidelines, and deliverables.
- Demonstrated ability to lead small to medium-scale Geotechnical exploration projects
- Must be able to pass a background check for clearance to work on various private and government facilities.
