Role PurposeAs a Sr. Staff Engineer, you will set the technical direction for a portfolio of advanced measurement systems that leverage optical metrology and machine vision to support product inspection, quality control, process development, and manufacturing operations. You will be recognized as the go-to technical authority in this domain: anticipating how competitive and next-generation technologies impact Corning's programs, architecting solutions that others build upon, and partnering broadly across job functions, disciplines, and organizations - frequently engaging senior-level stakeholders - to align measurement strategy with business needs. You will also coach and mentor engineers and share knowledge broadly for the benefit of Corning.
Key Responsibilities- Architect and set technical direction for measurement systems integrating optical metrology and machine vision; influence senior technical and management leaders on measurement strategy for major programs
- Invent, develop, and extend state-of-the-art measurement techniques, advancing next-generation capabilities across new technologies and products
- Deliver measurement systems, algorithms, and characterization techniques that measurably improve quality, yield, and profitability
- Lead technology transfer from early-stage development to production-ready manufacturing solutions; partner across Development, Quality, IT, and Operations to deploy systems into manufacturing workflows
- Coach and mentor engineers; author technical reports, specifications, and intellectual property filings that build institutional knowledge and protect Corning's innovations
Experiences/Education - Required- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field. Equivalent, recognized expertise gained through extensive relevant industry experience will also be considered.
- Minimum relevant experience in optical metrology and/or machine vision: 12+ years with a bachelor's degree, 10+ years with a master's degree, or 8+ years with a Ph.D.
- Recognized technical expertise in optical metrology and/or machine vision, with a track record of inventing, developing, or extending state-of-the-art measurement technologies.
- Extensive hands-on experience with optical systems, imaging hardware, and measurement instruments, including architecting complete, deployed measurement systems.
- Strong programming skills in Python and/or C# for algorithm development, data manipulation, and system integration.
- Deep knowledge of machine vision algorithms (blob analysis, edge detection, morphology, feature extraction, classification, etc.).
- Experience developing and deploying machine learning techniques, including training convolutional neural networks (CNNs), within production measurement systems
- Proficiency in data analysis using tools such as Excel, MATLAB, or Python; familiarity with software platforms including HALCON, OpenCV, or LabVIEW
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior technical and management leaders and to set technical direction for programs.
- Up to 10-30% domestic and international travel may be required, with trips ranging from one day to several weeks.
Experiences/Education - Desired- Deep expertise in optical metrology techniques, including 3D measurement, structured light, lasers, and physical optics.
- Experience with motion control systems and imaging platforms.
- Knowledge of statistical analysis and process improvement methodologies such as design of experiments (DOE)
- Familiarity with database management and high-performance computing (HPC) systems.
- Track record of supporting manufacturing operations with metrology and inspection systems at scale.
- Record of authorship, including technical reports, publications, or patents) and experience mentoring engineers and scientists
This position does not support immigration sponsorship. The range for this position is $133,911.00 - $184,128.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
