Role SummaryThis is an opportunity to build and improve cloud-based email security services at scale while working with experienced engineers, architects, and product leaders in a mission-driven cybersecurity organization.
At Sophos, our mission is to protect customers from cybersecurity threats. The Messaging Security Group develops Sophos Central Email features and capabilities, and this Senior Software Engineer will work within that engineering team. In this role, you will influence system design and engineering best practices across MSG, collaborate with senior development leaders, architects, and product management, and help execute Sophos' vision for email and messaging security. As part of an agile team, you may lead projects under the guidance of an architect or senior technical lead. For UI projects, you will mentor team members and collaborate closely with the global Sophos UI team to ensure alignment with company UI principles.
What You Will Do- Use AI-assisted development tools, where appropriate, to design, develop, test, document, and deploy components of Messaging Security Group services.
- Contribute across the full software stack by designing and implementing product components with strong test coverage and automation, delivering against project timelines, quality expectations, and requirements.
- Participate in project planning and help deliver high-value, high-quality solutions that meet business needs.
- Analyze and understand project requirements
- Participate in product design in alignment with the technical strategy, quality standards, and functional requirements.
- Mentor junior members of the team through pair programming and code reviews
- Contribute to daily stand-ups, kick-offs, collaborative estimation and retrospective meetings
- Participate in security reviews of new developments to ensure that released products comply with Sophos' security requirements and industry best practice, including analyzing product security concerns and presenting security documentation
- Actively contribute to code reviews to improve quality and correctness across the immediate team.
- Define test scenarios and test cases to ensure quality of the team's deliverables
- Other duties and responsibilities as directed
What You Will Bring- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience shipping production services
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools, such as Claude and Codex.
- 5+ years of experience in software development using Java, JavaScript, Angular, GoLang, and possibly React.
- 5+ years of experience using AWS services (S3, EC2, SQS, SNS, CloudWatch, Lambda, ECS, EKS)
- Ability to navigate ambiguous, complex problems (requirements are unclear, multiple competing constrains like performance, security, cost etc.)
- Confidence in designing, implementing and testing software systems and components
- Confidence in presenting your design in front of our Tech Council
- Ability to read code and review PRs
- Experience working with best-of-breed cloud technologies and troubleshooting large-scale cloud-based applications.
In Canada, the base salary for this role ranges from $105,000 to $175,000. In addition to base salary, we offer additional compensation including bonus eligibility and a comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's specific pay within this range will depend on a variety of factors, including job-related skills, training, location, experience, relevant education, certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
