Full Job Description
THE OPPORTUNITY

We have a platform we are proud of. We are building its successor.

Advantage builds the platforms that welcome new students and employees at more than four hundred colleges, universities, and organizations, including Harvard, UCLA, and Florida State. Four and a half million people move through them every year.

That platform was built for the company we were. We are replacing it with a single multi-tenant system built for the company we are becoming, and we are hiring the engineer who will help design it.

This is application and platform architecture, not infrastructure and not CMS development.

WHAT YOU WOULD OWN

The decisions everything built afterward has to live with
  • Multi-tenancy. Isolation model, tenant context propagation, tenant scoped caching, resource isolation. This is what we screen hardest on.
  • Domain boundaries. Where the seams belong, and when a capability earns its own service.
  • Event and messaging architecture. Queue, event bus, streaming, or a synchronous call, with delivery guarantees and idempotency.
  • Data at scale. SQL Server where adding an index is not the answer. Partitioning, lock contention, read and write separation, event fed read models.
  • Caching and identity throughput. Invalidation under tenant scoping, and provisioning that absorbs thousands of enrollments inside a two week window.
  • Technical design. Architecture decision records, forward only migrations across hundreds of tenants, and review that raises the bar.

Roughly seventy percent hands on engineering, thirty percent architecture. We want an architect who is still in the code.

WHAT WE NEED

Six things, and they are the whole list
  • Eight or more years shipping production software, with real depth in .NET and C#.
  • You have designed and shipped multi-tenant software and can explain the model you chose.
  • Relational data modeling and query performance where adding an index was not the answer.
  • Event driven and messaging architecture, including when not to use it.
  • You have evolved a production system while people were using it.
  • You write design documents other engineers can act on.

Helpful, not required: domain driven design, federated identity, Azure, distributed caching. Content management experience is not required. This work sits outside the CMS.

IS THIS THE RIGHT FIT?

We would rather be clear now than three interviews from now

You will probably love this role if
  • You want to design a platform at the foundation and then build it.
  • You want to go deeper technically without being told that means you have stalled.
  • You would rather shape a product with six other engineers than maintain one with six hundred.

It may not be the right fit if
  • You have moved away from writing code. This role stays hands on.
  • Your background is site reliability or infrastructure tooling. That belongs to a different seat here.
  • You want to manage people. We have a separate opening for that.

WHERE THIS ROLE GOES

Staff Developer is a destination here, not a consolation prize

Staff Developer is the summit of our individual contributor track, with no expectation you ever move into management, and our technical track is paid on the same scale as our leadership track. We are hiring at Senior with a written path to Staff.

You will be coached by our Director of Technology and Director of Engineering, who bring more than forty five years of combined consulting and Fortune 500 experience.

PAY AND LOGISTICS
  • Base salary: $140,000 to $168,000
  • Jacksonville, Florida. Hybrid, with remote days after onboarding. Full time, direct hire. You must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • 401(k) with match, profit sharing, health, dental and vision, paid vacation, flex time, gym membership, and funded training.
