Role description:Arcadis is seeking a
Senior Engineer - Signaling, Comm and Scada to lead the design and integration of railway signaling systems for commuter rail, LRT, subway and heavy rail projects across Canada and USA.

Role accountabilities:As a Senior Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, implementation, testing/commissioning, and management of signaling and train control systems across both heavy and light rail networks. Your expertise ensures the safety, reliability, and efficiency of rail operations, in compliance with industry standards and client requirements.
In this role, you will be responsible for developing and reviewing signaling system designs for heavy and light rail projects, utilizing relay-based, CTC, electronic interlocking, CBTC, ETCS, and other relevant technologies. You will prepare signaling layouts, control logic, and interface specifications to ensure robust system architecture tailored to project requirements.
You will lead or support the delivery of signaling projects, collaborating closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams including track, power, and communications specialists. A key aspect of your role will be ensuring seamless integration of signaling systems with other rail subsystems. You will also plan, develop, and conduct factory and site acceptance testing, oversee commissioning, and troubleshoot signaling equipment. Your responsibilities will include supporting the installation and upgrade of both legacy and new signaling infrastructure.
In this role, you will ensure that all signaling solutions comply with applicable safety, regulatory, and operational standards such as CENELEC EN 50126/8/9 and AREMA. You will contribute to the development and review of safety cases, and you must be familiar with CROR rules and health and safety measures while working on track environments. Documentation and reporting will be integral, as you prepare technical documentation including design reports, test plans, as-built records, and maintenance manuals.
Additionally, you will liaise with clients, suppliers, contractors, and internal teams to deliver project objectives on time and according to specifications. You will identify and implement opportunities for system and process optimization, continuously seeking ways to improve project delivery and operational efficiency.
Qualifications & Experience:Required- Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related field
- P. Eng designation in Ontario, BC, or Alberta
- 10+ years of relevant experience in rail signaling engineering (heavy and/or light rail), including design, installation, and commissioning
- Familiarity with signaling principles, system architectures, and applicable standards (e.g., CENELEC, AREMA)
- Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings and using design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Bentley Rail Track)
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams
- Attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality
Preferred- Professional certification (IRSE or equivalent)
- Knowledge of both passenger and freight rail operations
- Project management skills and experience
The salary range for this position is $106,000 - $159,000. The base salary represents Arcadis' hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.
