Senior Scientist Technical Support

The Opportunity

At Molecular Diagnostics, we realize the potential of personalized care as the laboratory's most trusted and preferred source for molecular diagnostic solutions. We are a division of Abbott Laboratories, a global, diversified healthcare innovator with a legacy of pioneering work in medical diagnostics.

Abbott Molecular has an opening for a Senior Scientist, Technical Support within the On-Market Technical Support Team based in Des Plaines, IL. In this role, you will lead and provide technical expertise for multiple process development projects supporting Abbott's on-market molecular assay portfolio.

The Senior Scientiste, Technical Support will drive design changes, resolve product performance and manufacture issues, developing process improvements to enhance gross margin and operational efficiency, and supporting supply chain continuity initiatives. The Senior Scientist will manage complex cross-functional projects, assess product and process impacts, and lead multidisciplinary teams to develop and execute effective solutions. Success in this role requires strong technical knowledge, project leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate across functions to deliver business and product objectives.

What You'll Work On

  • Generates and manages multiple project timelines and resources
  • Develops and validates processes for implementation in manufacturing and quality control
  • Designs experiments and tests multiple hypotheses based on data analysis
  • Prepares verification protocols and records for submission to regulatory agencies
  • Achieves team and individual performance goals
  • Mentors' others on their technical writing skills for data analysis, design change documents and change control
  • Proactively identifies opportunities to improve compliance with QSR / ISO requirements
  • Confronts issues, motivates and influences others, negotiates and manages crisis, to attain desired results
  • Listens actively, fosters information exchange, provides scientific and operational information effectively, establishes networks, and presents/defends positions
  • Develops strong networks throughout the Division
  • Inspires others toward the achievement of team/project objectives
  • Operates with integrity and respect, actively resolves conflicts
  • Utilizes established networks with support groups within MDx division
  • Recognizes and promotes acceptance of changes in internal/external environment
  • Makes timely scientific, operational, and business decisions, appropriately elevates high-risk decisions


Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in scientific and technical field is desired or relevant combination of education and experience.
  • 6 years of experience in a related scientific field.
  • Experience with real-time PCR. PhD in biological sciences preferred (advanced degree(s) may offset the required years of experience)


Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in a life or physical science preferred with up to two years research or industrial experience or BS/MS degree with additional progressive research experience enough to demonstrate equivalency
  • Experience with computer and data management.
  • Experience handling multiple basic projects or a single complex project
  • Experience with change control, data driven experimental design and investigation processes
  • Experience with acquiring, analyzing and interpreting data from a variety of sources
  • Knowledge of experimental design and/or statistical tools and/or project management tools
  • Experience with technical problem prevention / resolution
  • Experience with leading project teams and/or mentoring / teaching others
  • Understanding change control impact on design / validation of products and/or processes
  • Previous experience with multiple immunoassay families (disease states), technologies, clinical utilities and Abbott systems
  • Experience in operations or on-market product support
  • Experience with application of six sigma tools for root cause identification
