Position Summary

Thales Canada, Defence & Security is engaged in supporting the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) through its In-Service Support (ISS) Programs. Between the AOPS & JSS In-Service Support (AJISS) and Minor Warships & Auxiliary Vessels (MWAV) programs, Thales Canada provides support to over 70% of the RCN fleet. Thales Canada is leveraging cutting edge solutions to deliver preventative and corrective maintenance, Integrated Logistics Support (ILS), Program Management, Engineering and Lifecycle Material Management (LCMM), and new capabilities to numerous platforms.

Thales requires a Senior Requirements Engineer to join the requirements management team.  The requirements management team is central to AJISS program success, ensuring that all contractual, technical, and regulatory requirements are systematically captured, traced, verified, and controlled throughout the vessel support lifecycle. We are building a dedicated team to establish enterprise-wide requirements visibility, support performance incentive achievement (SRVF), and maintain audit-ready compliance documentation.

You will join the Requirements Management team located in Ottawa, Canada, working in a collaborative environment with Canada/DND stakeholders, engineering teams, and integrated project teams to deliver mission-critical requirements management capabilities.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Requirements Engineers strive to understand the end-user’s needs, limitations, and concept of employment for the system and ensure that they are accurately captured, analyzed, documented, and maintained throughout the system lifecycle.  They play a significant role in ensuring that we build systems which are fit for purpose and not merely technically compliant.

The essential functions and responsibilities of a requirements engineer include:

  • Lead the elicitation, analysis, and documentation of system, subsystem, and interface requirements. Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure requirements and related work products are consistent with the needs, desires, and concerns of the end-users.
  • Ensure that requirements are unambiguous, feasible, testable, and verifiable. Develop and maintain requirements specifications and related artefacts in the approved requirements management tool.
  • Ensure bidirectional traceability between requirements and architecture/design, verification, and validation artefacts. Perform / Review requirements decomposition / fan-out, including coverage and gap analysis. Plan and participate in requirements reviews, walkthroughs, and sign‑off activities with engineering and customer representatives.
  • Manage requirements baselines and changes, including impact analysis and configuration control.

This role leads the technical implementation of requirements management processes and tools, typical duties will include:

  • Designing and maintaining the requirements architecture in IBM DOORS/Polarion ALM. Building and maintaining the Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM) with bidirectional links.
  • Configuring tool modules, views, attributes, and automated compliance reports. Designing & developing the points-of-contact between DOORS, IPESA, DRMIS, and PfMS. Leading complex requirements decomposition and contract amendment impact analysis.
  • Creating technical procedures for requirements flowdown and verification method assignment. Mentoring intermediate and junior team members on tool usage and requirements best practices

OBJECTIVE: To provide products and customer solutions in consistency with all stakeholders’ needs and entity policies, as well as continuously enhance engineering competitiveness

Minimum Qualifictions

  • University or college degree in engineering or a related discipline.
  • At least 12 years of professional experience in the design and integration of complex systems in commercial and/or military domains.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience with a major focus on requirements.
  • Ability to succeed in cross-functional/multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the minimum professional experience specified above, experience in any of the following areas would be considered an asset:

  • Requirements management tools such as DOORS and/or Polarion;
  • Familiarity with DXL;
  • Scripting and Integration technologies - REST APIs, XML/ReqIF exchange formats, Python, Database queries;
  • Experience in the in-service-support of naval platforms;
  • P. Eng designation is preferred.

In addition to the minimum professional experience specified above, experience in any of the following areas would be considered an asset:

  • IREB Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering (CPRE) - Foundation or Advanced
  • INCOSE Systems Engineering Professional (SEP) or Associate (ASEP)
  • ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148
  • INCOSE SE Handbook

Special Position Requirements

Full time, standard business hours. Possibility of travel to east or west coast sites for technical support / installation onboard ships in dock.

The reference Total Target Compensation(TTC) market range for this position, inclusive of annual base salary and the variable compensation target, is between Total Target Cash 110,000.00 - 140,000 CDN Annual.
