Full Job Description
What We're Looking For
HNTB is seeking a Senior Project Engineer - Fire Protection to lead the planning, design, and delivery of complex fire protection engineering projects across aviation, transit, transportation, government, and infrastructure markets. This role is responsible for producing and overseeing fire protection engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, and construction documents while ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.

The Senior Project Engineer applies advanced technical expertise to develop innovative and practical fire protection solutions, including fire suppression, fire alarm, life safety, smoke control, and code compliance systems. Working closely with project managers and multidisciplinary teams, this position provides technical leadership, supports project delivery, manages discipline-specific scope, schedule, and budget performance, and serves as a trusted advisor to clients and project stakeholders. This role also contributes to business development efforts through proposal support, client engagement, and technical presentations while mentoring junior engineers and helping strengthen HNTB's fire protection practice.

What You'll Do:
  • Uses senior-level technical expertise to consider broad range of engineering solutions.
  • Responsible for the discipline-specific planning, work distribution, and leadership and adherence to the schedule, and budget on complex or unusual engineering projects.
  • Assists in marketing responsibilities, including proposal generation.
  • Develops scope of work and level of effort and manages adherence to scope and budget on complex or unusual engineering projects within discipline.
  • Oversees completeness and accuracy of project team's work within the technical discipline.
  • Provides technical guidance and mentoring to team members to achieve overall project objectives on complex or unusual engineering projects.
  • Coordinates technical aspects of the project with client counterpart and teaming partners at staff level for work within the discipline on complex or unusual engineering projects.
  • Leads discipline delivery on larger, multi-disciplinary projects. Works closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.
  • Assists with coordination and planning of schedules, hours, and distribution of work for other disciplines on multi-discipline projects on complex or unusual engineering projects
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


What You'll Need:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 8 years of relevant experience, or
  • Master's degree in Engineering and 7 years of relevant experience, or
  • PhD in Engineering and 6 years of relevant experience

  • Experience supporting aviation, transit, transportation, government, or large public-sector facilities.
  • Knowledge of NFPA, ICC, FM Global, and Florida-specific code requirements.
  • Experience managing engineering tasks, client relationships, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Business development and proposal preparation experience.


What We Prefer:
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS).
  • 10 years of relevant experience.
