Responsibilities

As a Senior Product Designer, you will lead the design of digital, data, and AI-powered products that create measurable value across New York Blood Center Enterprises. You will drive user-centered product discovery, influence product strategy, and partner closely with Product Managers, Engineers, Data Scientists, and business leaders to solve complex operational and analytical challenges.

 

You will operate across the full product lifecycle, from identifying opportunities through user research and workflow analysis to designing, validating, and measuring solutions after launch. You will help establish design standards, mentor other designers, and champion a culture of continuous discovery and evidence-based decision making.

 

This is a highly collaborative role embedded within Data and AI Product Innovation (DAPI) team’s product operating model and responsible for shaping experiences that support healthcare, operational, and data-driven decision making.

 

Product Discovery & Strategy

  • Lead end-to-end discovery efforts to identify unmet user needs and business opportunities.
  • Partner with Product Managers to define product vision, strategy, and roadmap priorities.
  • Translate business objectives into actionable design and user experience strategies.
  • Facilitate workshops, journey mapping sessions, and stakeholder alignment activities.
  • Influence product decisions through user research, data analysis, and design expertise. 

User Research & Insights

  • Plan and execute qualitative and quantitative research initiatives.
  • Conduct interviews, contextual inquiry, workflow observation, and usability testing.
  • Synthesize findings into actionable recommendations for product teams.
  • Establish continuous feedback loops with users and stakeholders.
  • Define research approaches for highly complex workflows and operational processes.

Experience Design

  • Design intuitive experiences across web, mobile, desktop, and analytics platforms.
  • Create information architecture, interaction models, workflows, wireframes, and prototypes.
  • Design solutions that balance user needs, business objectives, technical feasibility, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead design reviews and critique sessions to improve design quality across products.
  • Ensure experiences are accessible, scalable, and consistent. 

AI & Data Product Design

  • Lead design efforts for AI-assisted workflows, analytics, and decision-support systems.
  • Design human-in-the-loop experiences that improve trust, transparency, and adoption.
  • Create interaction patterns for explainability, recommendations, confidence indicators, and user oversight.
  • Partner with Data Science teams to translate complex models into understandable user experiences.
  • Design intuitive analytics and visualization experiences for operational and executive audiences. 

Design Systems & Design Operations

  • Establish and evolve design standards, reusable patterns, and component libraries.
  • Drive adoption of design systems across product teams.
  • Improve design workflows, documentation practices, and governance processes.
  • Define best practices for discovery, validation, accessibility, and design quality.
  • Contribute to the long-term maturity of design within DAPI.

Measurement & Continuous Improvement

  • Define usability and adoption success metrics alongside Product Managers.
  • Analyze user behavior, product usage, and research outcomes to identify improvements.
  • Validate product outcomes after release and drive iterative enhancements.
  • Use quantitative and qualitative evidence to guide design decisions. 

Leadership & Mentorship

  • Mentor Product Designers and contribute to design capability development.
  • Provide design leadership on high-impact initiatives.
  • Facilitate cross-functional collaboration across Product, Engineering, Data Science, and Business Operations.
  • Advocate for user-centered thinking across the organization.
  • Contribute to hiring, onboarding, and growth of design talent as needed.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Design, Psychology, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent experience.

Experience:

  • 8+ years of experience designing digital products in product-led organizations.
  • Demonstrated success leading end-to-end product design initiatives.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing research, interaction design, prototyping, and measurable business outcomes.
  • Experience working within Agile product teams.
  • Experience influencing stakeholders and driving product decisions through design.
  • Advanced proficiency with Figma and modern prototyping tools.

Knowledge:

  • User-centered design principles, interaction design patterns, and information architecture.
  • Usability testing methodologies—moderated, unmoderated, and guerrilla testing.
  • Accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1) and inclusive design practices.
  • AI/ML product concepts: designing for explainability, trust, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
  • Agile product development lifecycle and how design integrates across discovery and delivery.
  • Data visualization principles and best practices for analytics product interfaces.

Skills:

  • Cultural competency and the ability to communicate effectively in a culturally sensitive manner with both individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in Figma or equivalent design and prototyping tools.
  • Wireframing, mockup creation, and high-fidelity prototyping.
  • User research facilitation—interviews, contextual inquiry, usability testing, and synthesis.
  • Visual design—layout, typography, color, and component design.
  • Communication—presenting and defending design decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Abilities:

  • Translate complex, ambiguous workflows into clear, intuitive interface designs.
  • Balance design quality with speed in a fast-paced, lean team environment.
  • Work collaboratively across disciplines—PM, Engineering, Data Science—without losing design integrity.
  • Advocate for the user in product decisions while remaining pragmatic about technical constraints.
  • Iterate quickly based on user feedback, usability findings, and product data.
  • Contribute to team design culture through documentation, critique, and knowledge sharing.

Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the requirements above that has supplied the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

For applicants who will perform this position in Westchester County, the proposed annual salary is $140,000.00 to $150,000.00 per year.  For applicants who will perform this position outside of New York City or Westchester County, salary will reflect local market rates and be commensurate with the applicant’s skills, job-related knowledge, and experience.

The New York Blood Center (NYBC) is a nonprofit community, regional blood center that provides blood and transfusion-related medical services to patients in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. NYBC also conducts research in hematology, blood banking, transfusion medicine, and cellular therapies. The center was founded in 1964 and is headquartered in New York City. NYBC operates 13 blood donation centers and has partnerships with over 40 hospitals in the Northeastern United States.
