If so, the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Diagnostics & Instrumentation Services (DIS) department is seeking a Health Physics Dosimetrist for our Radiation Protection Dosimetry (RPD) program.
Dosimetrists provide technical support in external and/or internal dosimetry via determination of radiological doses and maintaining national accreditations, as well as other Health Physics/Radiological Engineering work, and support of emergent radiological incidents and emergency response situations.
Candidates selected for this Health Physics Dosimetrist role will be called upon to provide direct leadership, supervision and support to the Health Physics Technicians and/or Health Physicists within RPD and will be the RP Subject Matter Expert (SME) and dedicated Point of Contact (PoC) in support of Line Customers that require dosimetry services.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Direct and supervise the activities of Health Physics Technologists in providing dosimetry services.
- Support other RPD Health Physicists in carrying out all dosimetry services.
- Provide expert-level advisement to larger Radiation Protection (RP) organization and Line Customers on the use of dosimetry services in all experimental and production environments encountered in Sandia's functional Mission spaces.
- Provide expert-level advisement to RP organization and Line customers in the appropriate application of DOE regulations and orders as well as SNL policy regarding dosimetry services.
- Provide expert-level advisement to the RPD Program Lead and management on resource allocations for dosimetry services.
- Lead RP participation as an SME for dosimetry on safety committees at the Corporate and customer level.
- Lead RP participation as an SME for dosimetry services on defined work planning committees for RP and Line customers.
- Perform expert-level technical analysis and quality review of dosimetric measurements and monitoring data.
- Lead RP technical projects and programmatic working groups.
- Authorize technical documents for the implementation of the Dosimetry program in support of Line customer projects, as well as for the greater RP organization.
- Lead and/or participate in internal and external audits and assessments related to radiation protection dosimetry.
- Train RP personnel and Line customers in the implementation and application of RPD services.
- Provide overall subject matter expertise in dosimetry services for emergency management during both exercises and emergencies.
Some travel may be required.Activities include working with or in the presence of hazardous materials. Potential hazards include but are not limited to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, safety hazards, biological hazards, noise, and ergonomic hazards.Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.Salary Range$102,400 - $199,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require- Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or related field, plus five (5) or more years of directly related experience or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
- Experience with the following:
- 10CFR835, 10CFR830, and/or 10CFR20.
- Computer skills, including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
- Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Qualifications We Desire- Master's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or related field, plus one or more years of dosimetry program work experience.
- Experience with the following:
- Working in a dosimetry program with or without DOELAP accreditation.
- Software development and/or database management.
- Direct supervision of Health Physics Technologists and other Health Physicists or Radiological Engineers.
- Operational environment such as DOE or NRC facilities or Naval Reactors
- Proven track-record of organizational and individual leadership skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and access to a private vehicle for travel to and from work locations.
- Ability to work effectively independently and in team situations in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to occasionally work a modified schedule to meet customer needs and travel.
- Proven ability to handle multiple projects concurrently, moving from programmatic to technical work seamlessly for varying types of dosimetry service concerns.
- Proven track-record of independently developing solutions related to dosimetry issues of moderate to high complexity and impact.
- Ability to provide expert analysis of situations and make recommendations to the RPD Program Lead and RP Management on changes to policies, processes, or methods.
- Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or in the process of obtaining certification.
About Our TeamThe Radiation Protection organization provides radiation protection support services to Sandia line organizations and is the steward of the corporate Radiation Protection Program. Services provided include: Translation of DOE directives and federal rules into Sandia-specific requirements and guidance; development of tools to assist in the identification and control of hazards associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel to support radiological activities and operations throughout the Laboratories; and workplace sampling and monitoring services to ensure effectiveness of radiological controls. The Organization works with the SNL Radiation Protection Safety Committee to establish goals, measure performance, and perform assessments to collect data to support continuous improvement in the safe performance of radiological operations. As a component of the overarching Radiation Protection Organization, the Radiation Protection Dosimetry team provides dosimetry services for Radiation Protection Operational groups and other Mission customers for radiation monitoring purposes.
